I am wondering if there are records anywhere of Irish returning from America to Ireland to fight in uprisings, in this instance 1867. 2nd Great Grand Uncle John Comerford – below is an extract from a longer than normal obituary.

23 Jan 1909, Cambridge, Massachusetts

John Comerford was born in Kilkenney. Ireland, and had he lived until May would have been 90 years old. Coming to Boston more than 50 years ago, for the greater part of his life he was a resident of this vicinity, He had learned the trade of custom shoe maker in the old country and followed that occupation here. …While sympathizing with and aiding every branch of the Irish movement, he was particularly Interested in the Fenian Brotherhood, and in 1867 revisited Ireland for the purpose of joining the projected uprising.

    Bill,

Attached from Wikipedia which gives an account of the Uprising. You could search your local library to see if the surname "Comerford" appears.

Following the defeat of the Uprising, the Irish Police were granted the title "Royal" by Queen Victoria and they became known as the Royal Irish Police.

  • Bill,

Some further information on the 1867 Fenian Uprising.

The Nenagh Guardian newspaper gives detail in relation to County Tipperary which adjoins Kilkenny.

There is a John Comerford recorded, but of a previous generation.

  • Thank you McCoy.

I do have a question about Fenian Documents in the State Paper Office on JSTOR.pdf.  Since having trouble reading/viewing.

Do I need to create and account on the JSTOR site to read this document?

  • Bill,

You will need to create and account. I suggest that you do this through your local library, as there is a fee to download the pages (23) which are mainly in relation to activities of the leaders

    in the Greater Dublin Area.

I have requested details of how you can access the various files in the Archives, but there is a delay on getting the information.

I will inform you whenever I get it.

  • Bill,

In order to search the Archives, you will need to have a particular query with a reference detail.

I attach two newspaper articles on some of the trials which gives a good account of how the Uprising was being organised.

    Best Wishes,
