Hello, helpful people here!  I would appreciate your guidance in finding the online location of the Will of Edward Cudmore (c1759-1808), attorney in Limerick city, husband of Mary Webb, son of Paul Cudmore and Susannah Apjohn, father of Paul, Catherine and Susannah.  His will was proved on 11 3 1808.

I do have the index page, but I do not know if these indexes are then linked to a surviving transcription of the actual wills.

Thank you very much. Duane McDonald

  • Wills before 1858 were processed by Established Church Courts and known as Prerogative Court or Consistorial Courts, unfortunately when the system changed to the Probate Court in 1858 the documentation was sent to the Public Records Office in Dublin on the same site as the Four Courts - which was destroyed in a fire and explosions during the civil war. In most cases just the index entries survive, some transcripts and other sources do exist but none seem to cover Limerick Diocese for 1808 - see : Prerogative and diocesan copies of some wills and indexes to others, 1596 – 1858 (National Archives of Ireland).

A very long shot you could try checking the website of the Virtual Treasury/Beyond2022.ie which is working to recover as much information as possible from burnt fragments recovered fro the scene, and documents from other sources etc.
