Looking for any record of ancestor Alfred j mahon. Sailed to South Africa in 1800's. Urban legend is he was a stowaway? From Ireland or Manchester. We found his gravestone and says born manchester. 1824. However his one son's death notice says Irish. ??

There was no body of the name Alfred Mahon recorded on the paysite rootsireland.ie anywhere in Ireland before 1867. The site is based on church records that exist. However, the recording of births was very variable across the country and there are many parishes where records didn't start until the 1830s or later. So, just because there was no record found, doesn't mean that the wasn't born here. He could have been born in a place where no records were kept until a later date.
