I've been trying to find accurate birth information on my ancestor Bernard Martin and I think I finally found it. He was born in 1831, Elphin, County Roscommon. He immigrated to America in 1834 so he was very young when he lived in Ireland. After searching, researching, and researching for Roman Catholic Baptism information for Elphin, County Roscommon, I finally found a Bernard Martin baptized 03 Oct. 1831. my previous searches showed a Bernard Martin born in 1836 but none in 1831. Why this didn't show up until now I don't know. His parents were John Martin and Margret Murry, so now I need to research them. The sponsors for the Baptism were Bryan McCormick and Cath Gilluly. I guess the lesson learned is to never give up searching.

Until I find the immigration information I won't know for positive sure, but I'm pretty sure this is correct. Does anyone know of John Martin, Margret Murry, Bryan Mccormick or Cath Gilluly from the 1800's? What was going on in the Elphin area around 1831-1834 that would cause people to leave? Anything specific or just a quest for a new future. Any insights would be welcome.

  • Hello,

On the subscription site, rootsireland.ie,  there is the marriage record for John Martin and Margaret Murry on 4 Oct 1830, Elphin, Roscommon with Catherine McCormack and Catherine Corcoran as witnesses. Their parents' names are not recorded.

There is a baptismal record for William Martin on 22 Mar 1835 with those same parents. The address is given as Emlagh, Elphin, Roscommon.  Michael McGuire and Mary Mulvy are the sponsors.

There is also a baptism record for Margaret Murray on 7 Jun 1810 with parents given as Bernard Murray and Mary Maray. The residence is Cloonmahane, Elphin, Roscommon. The sponsors are Martin McGreal and Winifred McGreal. I did not find a baptism record for John Martin...the Elphin baptism records begin in 1808.

    Good Luck!

I see a Bernard Martin and wife Eliza on this

Could this be your relative as the birth date matches.
