I came across a record on the fold3 database that said a Cattigan man who joined the army around 1800 was born in 1781 in conwal. Would there be any records from that time or any history I could read about people living in conwal at that time. I am looking for the origin of this surname. Thank you

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a Conwal resource page from the Donegal Genealogy Resource site  http://donegalgenealogy.com/Conwalproj.htm   I don't see any evidence of the surname Cattigan. From what I have seen in the Griffiths Valuation and the 1911 census, Cattigan is mainly a West Mayo surname.

  • Thank you  robert. Rory odonnell of lifford left there with his people in 1654 and settled in ballycroy very many of the surnames in Achill are Donegal and Tyrone, Derry. I have started to discover my ancestors surnames in books on the abercorn Hamilton estate Strabane...patten, Kerrigan, lynchaun, Gallagher, these are all achill island surnames of my ancestors. In fact they all lived beside each other. Cattigan is found only in Achill 13 times and Roscommon once in griffiths. I am sure it's not from achill living amongst lynchaun, patten, Kerrigan, Gallagher, Sweeney.boyle, etc etc. The Irish for Cattigan and mcgettigan are very similar. I found mention of an officer in James 2nd army roger m'kittagan from cloned empty area where I found ancestral surnames like patten, Kerrigan and lynchaun so it makes me wonder a out the Cattigan surname, is Cattigan the achill version of mcgettigan? Then I find that mention of Hugh Cattigan born conwal 1780. On the 1796 flax growers list in conwal I again found lynchaun my grt grt granny's surname and 4 scanlons. Our next door neighbor to the Cattigans in 1855 in Achill and currently are still scanlons
