Hi, I live in Canada and i'm researching my family roots. I've traced them back to Athlone. My gr gr grandparents lived in Athlone on Court Devenish Lane in the later part of the 1800's and early 1900's. My gr gr grandfather was originally from Mullingar, his name is Bartholomew Fagan and my gr gr grandmother was Jane Payne daughter of Samuel Payne.I also noticed that there's a Payne's Lane in Athlone. My gr grandfather was John Thomas Fagan born 1868, he had 2 brother's Robert and Samuel, and 2 sisters Anna and Cecilia Fagan.John and Robert were both in the military at some point. As far as I can tell, none of his siblings ever married but then I may not have gone far enough to be sure in my research. I'd love to find some relatives there. Further my reseaech as well. I have visited Athlone briefly in 2011 but i'd love to return and finding a family connection is what i hope for, my Mom never had known any family from there, but always had a deep connection to Ireland, the only correspondence was from my gr gr Aunt Anna to my grandfather Frederick Fagan. The cards and letters i'd found were the only clue i had as to where to start. If anyone knows of any Fagan and Payne families that might have a connection i would love to hear from you, we are 2nd generation Canadians here on that side of the family. Any help or info would be much appreciated thank you. Cathy

  • There was an Anna Fegan who married in Athlone Jul ? Sept 1915, Vol 3, page 1. Can?t say whether it?s your family but it might be. You would need to buy the certificate to find out.

  • Thankyou so much for this info! How would i go about purchasing this certificate and from what source please , and would it give me details as to her parents etc.so i'd know i had the right Anna. Anna was listed in the 1911 census for Athlone as single and age 30.They lived on Court Devenish Lane and my grandmother was Jane Fegan age 72 then. I'm very excited by this info you've given me and hope it leads me to more info. Thanks again Cheers Cathy

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter, volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. You don?t need to fill them all in if you have the reference details. http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Tick the relevant box on the form.
