I have this excerpt from William Gyves "The Sargent Tribe"

The Sargents came to Ireland in 1668 from St Margaret’s, Cambridge, England, to teach in the Iremonger School at Blessington, County Wicklow.  The first papers I have are a Deed of Tenancy renewed January 1, 1701, as issued in 1668, and renewed in 1801 and in 1901.  We were tenants on the Downshire Estate, the title of the Hill family.  William was also Church Sexton, which involved the distribution to various charities, for which he received eight pounds and four shillings, as is mentioned in the church book several times as payment of arrears to him.

William Sargent is my 5 times reat grandfather.

As I understand it we are descended from his grandson also William Sargent, 1735 to 1831 who was married to a Miss Norton. We are not sure if this Willima's father was John Sargent and are tryin to find out.

  • Hi Sally, our volunteer has asked that I reply with the following information

That school in Blessington was named after a 'Joshua Iremonger' (born Wherwell, Hants) - he died childless in 1778 and his widow Penelope left an endowment to the school, the School was later taken over by the Educational Endowment Commissioners. (src : The Manor of Blessington, Thos. U. Sadleir, The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Sixth Series, Vol. 18, No. 2 Dec. 31, 1928, pp. 128-131 5 pages)

Penelope (nee Morgan) was previously married to Charles Dunbar - some further details hereand here.

There's a previous query on IRLXO message board which mentions this school  - if I remember correctly the family in question was Sargent (probably a spelling variation of..)

I saw a query on a Dublin business (Green) so checked a few of my directories... the only definite match by surname and address was from 1847 and 1848, no firstnames unfortunately, but there were some other Greens in the same type of business which I also included...

There are two George's St. in Dublin city, Great George's St South and Great George's St South, the first

North Gt. George's St. numbers run from 1 to 55, South Gt. George's St. has numbers 1 to 90.

In alphabetical Listings, e.g. directories, these are often listed as : Greorge's St. Sth. Gt. or similar, but
in everyday use as South Great George's Street etc.

  • sorry - just spotted two typos in that reply :

"..are two George's St. in Dublin city, Great George's St North and Great George's St South, the first.."

and the 1868 Thoms entry (last one) is not the correct number - should read 64 & 65 Adam McDonald, linen draper &c., 65 South Gt. George's St.
