Hello all,

I am hoping you may be able to help me solve the mystery around where my ancestors are from in Ireland. I have some documentation from family that says that my ancestors were from "Pond Cloon, county Leitrim". When I searched the internet for that, I came up with Cloone, in county Leitrim. I am not sure what the Pond may have represented.

Here is what I know. My relative, Charles Cain (probably spelled either Keane or Kaene in Ireland), was born around 1840. He came to the United States and died in 1914 in Utica, New York.

I have heard other stories that someone else in his family, maybe his brother, may have been named John Cain (again, likely Keane or Kaene).

John may have been born in 1838, and also died in Utica, New York in 1871.

Thanks for any assistance, my hope is that either am able to find something stating they were indeed from the Cloone area, or continue searching to determine where they were actually from.

  • Hi Sean,

There were families by the name of Kane in the surrounding areas of Cloone. I will have a see if there is any information I can get for you. In the meantime, you can have a look through the parish records below to see if you can find your relatives.

All the best with your research!

  • Hi Sean,

I found 9 Cain's in Leitrim in the 1901 census, they may be related to Charles and John. The oldest is Anne, born about 1831 - could be their sister? All of the Cain's in Leitrim lived in the towland of Beihy, parish of Cloone. So when you are looking at the registers (in the previous post) for Cain, look for Beihy in the address.

  • Thank you Teresa! These are some good leads.

Do you have tips on how to read the parish records? I learned how to write cursive in school, but reading these records in cursive is proving difficult haha. I can pick out some of the dates and months, but not sure how else it is laid out.

My family was under the assumption that my ancestors spelling of their name changed when they came to America, but based on the census, it appears they may have been named Cain back in Ireland as well.

Are there any Irish databases that contain emigration information?

  • Hi Sean, yes it can be difficult to decipher the writing at times. Keep in mind that many of the names were written in Latin, John was Johannes, Charles was Carolus.

  • Hello Sean, Teresa, have been looking through the Cloone queries, mothers family from there, and there is a site here, only one Cain mentioned in the surnames,  https://www.yourleitrimancestors.ie/index.htm

The site is updated from time to time, there is also a Leitrim History and Genealogy FB page and other Leitrim ones too, old photos and similiar for Mohill, nearest town of note to Cloone.

    All the Best
