Looking for more information about my ancestors from Breaffy, Ballina, County Mayo.

Andrew Neary (or Nary) (b. ca. 1821) married Anne Brenan (b. ca. 1825)

They lived at Breaffy (Brewaghy (Slieverue) [Griffin’s Valuation 1856] and had following children according to Kilmoremoy/Ballina R.C. parish records:

Cate Nary, born on the 13-Dec-1852 and baptised on the 26-Dec-1852. The sponsors were Pat Brennan and Kitty Brenan

Cormack Neary, born on the 30-Nov-1854 and baptised on the 02-Dec-1854. The sponsors were John Crean and John Crean.

Tady Neary, born on the 19-Sep-1859 and baptised on the 25-Sep-1859. The sponsors were James Nary and Cate Nary.

I’ve not been able to find more parish records for these Nearys after 1859, but might be more.  Andrew and Anne Neary and some of their family moved and were living in Bolton near Manchester according to 1881 England Census.  One of their grandsons, John, moved to Canada in the early 1900s to Victoria British Columbia where I now live.

  • Sorry to ask but do you know if the Cate Neary married a Timothy Foley in 1872?  This might be the same as my family, but need alittle more information about her.  I am from the Foley side and I have a Catherine Neary (also spelled Nary, Nery) married to a Timothy Foley born 1850, Marriage: 25 July 1872 Kilmoremoy, Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland.  Could it be the same one?  If so I can give you all his descendants.

  • Amy thanks so much for your message board post.  Unfortunately I do not have any more information about Cate Neary other than her baptismal record from 1852.  I don't know anything more about my family's time in the Ballina area really than what I put in my original post.  It would seem to me that it is a distinct possibility, or likelihood, that Cate from my Neary ancestry married Timothy Foley in 1872.  She would have been 20 years old at that time, and the marriage took place in her parish.....  Do you happen to know where Timothy Foley lived, exactly?  I'm wondering as I found that my great great grandfather married my great great grandmother in Kilmoremoy in the 1820s - but I learned from the Griffin's valuation that their families lived across the road from one another.  If Timothy Foley lived near the Neary family at or near Breaffy (Brewaghy) outside Ballina, then I would think it very very likely that his wife Catherine Neary is my great grandfather's sister.  And that would be fantastic!  It would be great to connect the Foley/Neary family descendants.  I have been wondering what happened to the members of my family who did not move to England...there are two brothers also, Cormack Neary and Tady Neary who I know nothing about other than their birthdates.  Thanks again for you message board post.

  • BC Westy:  I'm sorry but I do not know much about Timothy Joseph Foley except that his birthdate is 12 April 1850 Castlebar Street, Westport, Mayo, Ireland.  His christening was 12 April 1850 St. Aldoen's, Dublin city, Dublin, Ireland.  He was a coach painter.  He married Catherine (Kate/Cate) Neary (Nary) on 25 July 1872 Kilmoremoy, Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland.  They had 4 kids:  Alice Foley born 1874 Claremorris, Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland, Ann Jane Foley 1876 Westport, Oughaval, Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, Catherine Foley 1877 Aranaree, Dallind , and Patrick Joseph Foley 1880 Castlebar street, Westport, Mayo, Ireland..  Timothy's parents are Timothy Foley and Ann Chute.  Now I could be mistaken on Catherine Foley 1877 being their child but everything seemed to line up with what I had. I'm sorry but I am at a dead end and can not figure out what else to do to find anymore information about her and him.  Once the family history left the USA I got completely stuck for I can not get access to alot of records there in Ireland.  Any ideas on where to search?  Somebody else gave me the marriage record information.  Thanks.  Amy.

  • Amy:  Sorry for the long time in responding, I've been wrapped up with a lot of other matters.  I don't have anything else I can add to what you know at the moment.  I don't live in Ireland, but in Canada, though I have visited Ireland a couple of times.  I'm still a bit new at genealogical research for Ireland, so can appreciated your struggles.  We visited Westport and Ballina when in Ireland and loved it there.  When I have the time and energy, I will try to investigate the Foley/Neary connection.  If I learn anything I will be sure to be in touch.  Thanks for reaching out, I really appreciate it.
