I reside in the USA and I am researching my great grandparents Michael Quinlan (1826-1909) Anne Scully (1839-1904) and hoping to gather information prior to their marriage which was 14 January 1860 in Ballina parish. I am particularly interested in Anne Scully and her family. After their marriage the couple settled in Silvermines and raised their family. I have traced all of their 7 children, 1 died in infancy, 3  emigrated to the USA and 3 remained in Ireland.

I have found a baptism 4 May 1839 (Newport parish) for Anne Scully (parents Patt Scully and Ally Dwyer but I have not been able to confirm a match. In the church records of Silvermines Nenagh their are witnesses, marriages and baptisms for Scully individuals. I want to know if any of these are siblings of my Anne Scully and if so which ones might have emigrated to the USA. Some of my 2nd cousins recall their parents talking about  cousins  "Scully" in New York.

My sources have been: familysearch.com, rootsweb.com, ancestry.com, the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census records, irish-roots.ie, Irish Newspaper Archives and numerous cousins across the USA. I would appreciate any help that I can gather!

  • Hi, my name is John Quinlan. My great grandmother was Anne Scully. She was married to Michael Quinlan who was of course, my great grandfather. His son Michael, was my grandfather, and his son Paddy, was my father. I still live in Silvermines and was born in Boherbee in the same cottage as Anne Scully and her husband lived. I have a certain amount of information regarding the Scully family if you would like to contact me. My email address is johnq52@hotmail.com. My great grandmother and grandfather were married the 14th January 1860, I was born the 13th January 1960, nearly 100 years to the day.
Anyway I am very interested in my family tree and think it would very much like to speak with you regarding the Quinlans who emigrated to the United States also.

Also, I presume that this would make us 3rd cousins, is that correct?

    Regards,

    John

  • Hello Patricia and John,

This is a long shot but I have had a great deal of luck in family research by taking long shots!

I have a Bridget SCULLY in my Family Tree and she has so far proved to be elusive despite my best efforts to find her.  She was my 2xgreat grandmother.

I estimate that she was born about 1825 or so and apart from that I know little or nothing about her.  I have her name on documents pertaining to her children so I know the name is correct.  Every child names her as their mother.

I have substantial information about the children but I have been unable to find out more about her.

HOWEVER .............. the family she married into has connections with the Silvermines!  And though I always assumed she was born in County Clare as that's where she lived after her marriage, I note that the Silvermines is not all that far from the town in Clare where she lived after her marriage .......... in fact only about 15 miles or so ......... not a great distance even by horse and cart in the 1840's & 50's!

It is entirely possible that my Bridget may be one of your Scully's!

Do you know if your Ann had a sister or even a cousin named Bridget by any chance?

I really hope that you may have a Bridget Scully that could be her as she is exasperating me!  She married into the Hogan family BUT the Hogans married into the Gregan family of the Silvermines!

Oddly enough, I also have Quinlan's in the family but not that closely related.

  • Hello,

Currently Anne Scully Quinlan is the only confirmed Scully in my tree. I am hoping Michael can help expand that line. My Anne Scully was born about 1839 in Co Tipperary, married Michael Quinlan 14 January 1860in Ballina Parish Co Tipperary, and died 2 Feb 1904 (registered in Nenagh Co Tipperary.) Other Silvermines Scully findings are:

    Diocese:Killaloe      Parish:Silvermines    Baptisms:Nov 1840-Dec 1880      Marriages Jan 1841-Oct 1880

1855 Sep 28   Michael Scully & Bridget Flannery (MARRIAGE)

1856 Nov 10 Mary Anne of Michael Scully & Bridget Flannery

1860 Sep 20 John of Michael Scully & Bridget Flannery (sponsers Edward Conroy & Anne Scully)

These records are from a film ordered through familysearch.org many years ago. I do not know if they pertain to my Anne Scully, infact the Anne Scully witness to the last baptism record is after her marriage to Michael Quinlan.

I will be sure and post any Scully discoveries here-especially if a Bridget appears! Good Luck.
