I am not sure where in Ireland my 2nd great grandfather came from?  What I know is that his name was Robert Kerse, maybe Robert E. Kerse. He moved to Richmond, virginia in the USA, by 1855 when he had his first of ten children. I had thought he came from Clare County because I found a Robert Kerse in the Tithe Applotment book from there in 1824. but, I don't really know that he is my Robert Kerse.

There is a family group on a ship that docks in Boston, Mass. USA on 24 Apr.1850, on the ship Northumberland that sailed from Galway. With one Robert Karse listed, meant to be Kerse according to census records later, it says he was 18, born about 1832, along with him is a Theady Kerse 27, Ann Kerse 27, and Patrick age 4 and Thomas, 3months old. Later in Richmond, Virginia, there is a Timothy Kerse who lives near my Robert Kerse, but Timothy does not have patrick or Thomas. I think I find them on a census in New York? So, maybe they weren't even kin?

There is another Robert Kerse who settles in Lowell, massachusettes, Usa, in 1853, maybe this is the one from the ship? I just don't know.

So ,I am hoping some of you will have some info to help.

You know, I believe there was an old naming tradition, one that had the names of children being named after certain family members. anyone know what this is?

Robert and his wife Margaret Kerse had ten children:

Thomas !855, Richmond,Va, USA

James H, 1857

Robert E.Jr.  1861

Mary E. 1863

John A.Kerse, 1864

Roseanna Kerse, 1866

Margaret A. (Maggie) Kerse

Francis P.Kerse 1872

Lillian Kerse, 1872

Timothy Leo Kerse, 1874

Does this give anyone any ideas about what Robert's, (b.1832 or 1835),  father's name might be?

Thank you anyone, for the guidance you might give. I already ahd one person kindly respond elsewhere. This seems to be a wonderful site! Helen

    Hi Helen,

Thanks very much for your message

I did a search of the Tithe Applotment Books and found the Robert Kerse you mentioned.  The parish listed is Killnaboy parish. It may be a good idea to look into church records in this parish to see if you can find this Robert?s records. You may be unable to find his birth record, as records may not go back that far. However you may be lucky and find his marriage cert.

You can use the Irish Times website to see what copies of records are available, you can also write to the local parish priest for possible assistance.

To see what is available in Killnaboy/Rath parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Clare&parish=Rath&churchid=799

You could also try contacting the Local Studies department of Clare County Library for possible assistance. Here is their webpage:

I hope some of these suggestions are helpful.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • I know of a Timothy Kearse who married Bridget Noonan probably in Teermaclane in the mid-late '60's...

  • I'm just Indexing a Robert Kerse with a wife Margaret Kerse and child Francis P Kerse born April 23, 1872 on the Register of Births from the City of Richmond, Virginia.  Thought it was interesting that I googled the last name to make sure I had the right spelling and found your post.  There are no others Kerse listed. It says that Robert's occupation is a Grocer. That's all the information there is.
