IrelandXO was very, very helpful in finding records of my great-grandfather Peter Lowry's (1819-1904) family (five children 1849 - 1865)  who lived on a tenant-farm in townland Ballydoolough, Galway. Recently, folks living in the area told me that Peter may have had a sister Ellen.  This is the first time I've had hints of Peter's siblings.

Griffiths Valuation listed several other "Lowry" tenants living in close proximity to Peter as Maurice, James, Pate and Mary.  Without DNA or family records I have no way of knowing if these residents were related OR if Peter's parents and siblings lived nearby.

Basically, I'm asking if any family records could exist somewhere for 1819 when Peter would have been born - most probably in Ballydoolough - along with siblings.  There are no remaining male Lowrys in Ireland from Peter Lowry.  Perhaps he had a male sibling(s) that continued the name and the blood line in Ireland.  There certainly are a lot of Lowrys in Galway now.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

I'm not aware of any records back to 1819. Church records start in the 1850s and I only see a few Tithe records for Ross civil parish and no Lowry/Lowery records.

I see you have reviewed the Galway County Heritage Office info for Ballydoolough  https://heritage.galwaycommunityheritage.org/content/places/joyce-country-places/joyce-country/ballydoolough

Have you reviewed the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has copies of death records from 1878-1968, marriage records from 1864-1943 and birth records for 1864-1918. I did a general search for Lowry/Lowery records from 1864-1901 in the Oughterard registration district and there were 15 death records and 11 marriage records in that period. However, many of the death records were index records (1864-1877). You will have to wait until the other records are added. I see a death index record for Maurice Lowry in 1866 (age 60).

  • Roger,

I've just come across a family tree on Ancestry.com that shows a Peter Lowry (1821-1904) "correct dates) in the Corr na Mona area with siblings James (1810-1890), Ellen "Nelly" (1824-1901) and Stephen (1828-) .  The gentleman who created the tree has a DNA connection to me through the decendants of Ellen Lowry May.  I hope this proves to be what I am looking for.  While I really like to verify things with records, this far back may only be by memory.

Thank you Roger for your work,

    Paul
