  • Hi Christina,

Can you be more specific about what you know? Names, dates, etc.? And about what it is you are looking for? Thanks.

  • Dear Patricia,

Thank you for your reply. I was born and brought up in Templemoreand I am trying to ascertain the origins of my family. I believe that my great grandfather was born in 1827 though I don't where but he definetly married Johanna Dwyer in the Catholic Church in July 1846. He died in Templemore in 1892. His son Thomas was my grandfather and his son Cornelius was my father and he died in 1972.

If you can be of a further help it would be most appreciated.

    Sincerely

  • Hi Christina,
In the Tithe records, searching by Armitage in Tipperary, the all are in the Modreeny Parish, which is not from from Cloughjordan.
I know that there were Armitage's in Cloughjordan as my cousin worked in the shop.
I see that on the marriage in Rootsireland the parents names of John and Johanna were not recorded. (got John's name when I searched for the marriage of Johanna Dwyer to an Armitage)
This is the list from the Tithe records. You really need his fathers name.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)

I also checked on your Thomas' birth, he was the youngest of nine children.

I looked through the Calender of Wills to see if I could find anything, sadley not.

  • Dear PATRICIA & MARGOT,

Thank you both for replies. In my limited research I did notice the Modreeny Amritages buit there is no connection with the Templemore Armitages.I do know a reasonacle amount of info about the family but I am curious to know how they arrived in Templemore.

John Armitage born in 1827 I think, married a Johanna Dwyer in 1846 and died in 1892 in Templemore,Johanna Dwyer born in 1830 and died in 1905.They had 8 children the youngest Thomas (my Grandfather) born in 1865 married  a Johanna Ryan in 1885 they had 7 children Thomas died in 1921 and Johanna in 1941 in Templemore.Their son Cornelius (my father) was born in 1888 married Margaret Kennedy in 1933 and died in Templemore in 1972. That is all I know. I did my research on FIND MY PAST I.E. Could you suggest any other sight I might be able to researc.

Thanks Chtistina Dunn ( nee Armitage)

  • Hi Christina,
There is one birth of a John Armitage in Rootsireland, I checked the entry in the three Parish books, the record is not listed in the Parish Books.
The one I saw must be incorrect. I always check an online record to the original books.
I will try other places to look. I noticed that there are notes in the Parish books about joining up with another Parish.
This may take me a bit of time.
I will come back to you and let you know.

  • Dear Margot, thank you for recent reply. I am interested in John Armitage particularly as I would like to know how we came to be in Templemore in the first place.

Also John Armitage  and Johanna Dwyer had three daughers , Bridget born in 1851 , Mary Anne born in 1852 and Sarah born in 1853 none of whom ca I trace. I have had more luck withthe boys, Patrick born in 1847, died in infancy,Denis born in 1850 emigrated to Boston, Patrick born in 1854,William born in 1857 and died in 1880 and Thomas born in 1865 died in 1921  ( he was my grandfather) As you can appreciate it is much more difficult to trace girls as they probably got married which presents the problem of new names.

Thanks once again for trying to help.
