Looking for info on my wife’s g-g-g-grandfather:

  • Thomas Armstrong: born ~1795, Sligo, Ireland (I think!) – died July 3 1879, Huntley,  Lanark, Ontario, Canada
  • His wife: Elizabeth "Betsey" Nesbitt: ~1795, County Down, Ireland – died 1872, unknown location.

Both immigrated to Canada in 1821.

 

Looks like Betsey's brothers immigrated with them as well: George Nesbitt, James Nesbitt, and John Nesbitt.

    Armstrong is a popular name in Sligo and there are birth, marriage and gravestone records available on Roots Ireland from the early 1800s (in the main the earlier records relate to members of the Protestant faiths).

    I am attaching one of these - for Thomas Armstrong - a doctor in Sligo who died in 1846, aged 38.

    Roots Ireland - www.rootsireland.ie - is a subscription site, but you can take out daily or monthly subscriptions.

  • Thanks.  I'll take a deeper dive into Roots Ireland.  I suspect I need older records.  I know they migrated to Canada in 1821.
