Hi,
I am an Australian currently in Seattle and planning to visit Ireland for the first time this August (2022).
My grandmother Julia Frances Delany was born in Borris-in-Ossory in 1891. She died in Australia. I know she was one of at least 10 children and her mother Mary Delany (ne Bancks) ran a store/pub in the Main Street after her father died.
My great grandfather Martin Delany was born in Abbeyleix in 1855, he died in Borris-in-Ossory in 1896. He is buried in the Knockaroo Catholic cemetery. Im not too sure how easy gravesites are to find so I'd appreicate help there.
I would also love to connect with any Delanys in my generation.
If anyone out there has any suggestion it would be wonderful
Best
Helen

Helen:
Delany/Delaney was/is a very common surname in Co. Laois.
1901 census your grandmother was listed as Frances http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Borris_in_…
1911 census indicates that Mary had ttwelve children and ten were livig in 1911. Grandmother was Frances Julia

More than likely there is no headstone for Martin and Mary. Jane Lyons has transcribed the headstones in Knockaroo cemetery and I don't see a Martin Delaney who died in 1896.

Thank you Roger. I do have some of that information. I found Mary's father John Bancks also in the Knokaroo cemetery and wonder if it has a headstone? I also found some items which show Martin and Mary ( E Bancks) had a pub or store on the Main Street of Borris-in-Ossory, so maybe my search will start there?! Helen

If john Bancks was listed on the Jane Lyons site then there was a marker/headstone.

Hi Helen, I stumbled upon this post whilst doing some of my own research. My name is Matthew Rogers and Julia Delany is my great grandmother. My mother Susan Rogers (Dodd) would be your second cousin. I would be very interested in any information or photos you have uncovered about the family.

Hi Matt thanks so much for connecting! Your mother Susan and I are first cousins (making you and my son Milo Giles second cousins!). I have had some success connecting with the elusive Delanys. Sacha O’Kelly on the same branch as you is the great granddaughter of Honoria (Nora) Delany, Julia’s sister. We met when I was in Dublin a few weeks ago. Are you in Sydney? I’m currently in Spain returning to Seattle in a couple of weeks. (Not exactly sure when we will be back in Australia) Things will settle down a bit once in US and I will put all my discoveries on paper. Please say Hi to Susan for me (if she’s still around?) I thought Una was great - she was my Dad Desmond’s sister xx
