  • Hello Miriam,

Thank you so much for responding and finding what you have.  My uncle thinks they were married in Ireland.  He can't find a marriage license in New York or surrounding area.

My husband will be in Ireland, flying in to Dublin next week.  Any ancestreal places you could recommend we visit in Co. Laois or Knocklead?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

    Sincerely,

    Jeanne

Thank you for your message to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  We have a local volunteer in Ballyadams who may be able to assist you with your research.  I have copied this message to him and he should reply very quickly.

In the meantime, if you need any further assistance, please let me know.

    All the best,

  • Hello Jeanne,

I am the Irelandxo Volunteer in the Ballyadams Parish area. I presume you are in Ireland at the moment, so welcome to the Emerald Isle.Sorry for the late reply, I have been having problems with my internet connection, it always seems to happen at the most inopertune times !. I do know the locations of the places mentioned in the emails, they are known as townlands in Ireland. areas of territory in the Irish countryside,so do not expect to see towns or villages with these names.

I will do some further research in the area tomorrow and see if I can pinpoint  where any of your ancestors lived. Maybe there are still some relatives in the area. I will then email you again with a view to arranging a meeting at some stage. We can then explore the area.

Hoping I can be of assistance.

    Best wishes,

    Paddy Lacey.

  • Hello Jeanne,

I am sorry to say I have made very little progress during the past few days. I did find the location of the Carrolls of Shanrath mentioned in Miriam's reply above. The last of them passed away in the 1980's. My informant in the area did say that he was aware that they had relatives in the U. S. Maybe they were your Carrolls,(Shanrath is in the parish of Ballyadams) but of course we cannot be certain. I have done a fairly thorough check of the two parishes where the marriage was likely to have occurred, but without success. After all these searches we still cannot  say even  if the marriage was in Ireland or U. S.

I can only make one more suggestion. This is to see if they can be picked up on a Passenger  list, which would say if they travelled as a married couple or as single people. Thus indicating which side of the Atlantic they married. Ancestry.com have a large collection of these lists, but it is a pay site.

If you still can manage some time in Dublin, you could go along to the National Library of Ireland in Kildare St.. There you can get free access to Ancestry, and there are PCs available for public use. The staff are also very helpful there.

Let me know if you have any success, or if I can be of further assisstance. Sorry that I could not be more helpful.

    Best Wishes,

    Paddy.

  • Hello Again Jeanne,

The only relevant records available are the church records. The records are viewable on the National Library of Ireland Website. They are shown by parish, and so therefore are not searchable by surname. You really need to know the parish. The parishes that your query suggests might be - Ballyadams and Stradbally(Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin).

    Ballyadams:

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0689

    Stradbally

    https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0732

I have looked at both of them without success, but feel free to have a go yourself, They are handwritten(sometimes poorly) and can be very tedious and time consuming.

If nothing surfaces in those two parishes, it is open to all parishes in the country, an impossible task.

Records began in both parishes in 1820,

Sorry for the lack of info, but I have tried all avenues.
