Hi....Have in my possession a small book  Society for promoting Christian Knowledge   1698     printed 1850.

This book has handwritten inside:

This book is adjudged to Eliza Elliott for superior merit at an examination in the principles of the Christian religion.  Held in Ballyshannon Church on the 19th dday of November, 1855.

I cannot make out the examiner signature (looks to be Rev. John Kinsaid??

I am looking for any info on this book and any info on Eliz Elliott.  I am sorry I have no dates for this Eliza or any other info except a pic of a young girl with her name on the back of the pic standing in a white dress with her hand on a bible (?).

I have a journal written by John Elliott in 1900 who mentions visiting the graveyard in Ballyshannon.  I have no idea where this might have been - would the Ballyshannon Church listed above have a cemetery and if so, where could I find info on burial names?

Sorry I can't be more helpful with this input..

    Hi Faye,

Interesting piece of history, about the society....(Church of England)

The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) is the oldest  Anglican Mission  organisation. It was founded in 1698 by Thomas Bray  (an Anglican priest), and a small group of friends. The most important early leaders were Anthon Wilhelm Boehm  and court preacher and Friedrich Ziegenhagen  Today, the SPCK is most widely known for its publishing of Christian books.

The Society was founded to encourage Christian education and the production and distribution of Christian literature. SPCK has always sought to find ways to communicate the basic principles of the Christian faith to a wider audience, both in Britain and overseas.

The initial focus was the British colonies and therefore also Ireland.

Ballyshannon is a town in County Donegal and Donegal has  its own page and message board here on this site, the local volunteers might be able to assist further if you would like to post your quiry there too http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-donegal

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks for your response...  These Elliotts from Ireland have been a puzzle for me for many years!! , and of course, they had to have simple names such as Mary, John, James and Elizabeth.    I had found the Ballyshannon cemetery on findagrave but there is only one interment listed there....and it isn't an Elliott.  Will continue searching for this part of my ancestry.......gggfather Hugh was born in Antrim 1809...still searching for his wife.....he and his son James and wife, Mary came to states in 1862..  so Hughs wife may be buried over there somewhere???  Again, thanks for your reply.....if you have any other suggestions, please let me know.
