I am in tune with my family on Canadian soil but would so love to know about their life in Ireland.  The senior patriarch was Nathaniel Barber (1785 Cavan) who married Elizabeth Williams (1786 Ballymena), marriage unknown.  Nathaniel apparently had (at least) two brothers, Frances and one unknown (suggested it may be William).  Nathaniel & Elizabeth started their family in Ireland: James (1817); Frances (1825); Samuel (1829) and Sarah (1831).  I suspect they came to Canada sometime in the 1830's, with Nathaniels brothers & families travelling seperately.

I am hoping to travel to visit our family's motherland, and to see the area where we originated.  If I could find out the Parish where they began, and a little about their lives, that could give me the start I need to do more research.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify the religious denomination for your Barbers? I checked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest Co. Cavan baptismal record was in 1839.

I did not find any Barber records in the Tithe records from the 1820s and strangely did not fin any Barbers in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation survey for Co. Cavan.

  • My Irish ancestors (Barber) were apparently from Cavan Co and were Protestant (Church of England).  They cam to Canada in the 1830's and I am thinking that would have been the first half of that decade as their daughter Eliza was born in Derby Twp in 1837,  The Barber's although it appears travelled seperately and on seperate dates spent some time in Peterborough (one part of the family) and in the Toronto vicinity (the other portion), before they all came together again in Grey-Bruce Counties between the south shores of Georgian Bay, and Lake Huron.  This is not looking like it could be a successful hunt for info, I guess because of the time period and the era in Ireland.  It would be fabulous and I welcome any sort of possible input.  My 3x's great grandmother however, was born in Ballymena, County Antrim in 1786.  Her name was Elizabeth Williams.  Again thank you all for any input.

  • Most information on dates in particular death info is from the headstones at the cemetery

Nathaniel and Elizabeth boarded a ship in 1841 to avoid supression of Ireland, and took the 13 week trip to Toronto Harbour
They had to hand carry their provisions - food and personal belongings
Stayed 1 year in Toronto before moving to Sydenham then on to Derby Twp when the survey was completed
60 people in total made the first trek to Derby, including the Barbers, McGuiness and Halls

Land Grant was for 100 acres and was open to all males 21 years +
For 4 years they had to clear 10 acres/year and build a homestead
After 4 years if the provisions were met they were given the deed to that property.

Nathaniel settled on Conc 3 - Lot 7

The info above was found in an area History book, but the dates are somewhat confusing.  Nathaniel & Elizabeth's youngest daughter, Eliza was born in 1837, but it is my understanding she was born in Derby Twp.  I don't mind being corrected at all, but I do love source info....It could make sense that they came later as the Land Grant program that they all took part in was completed, or at least the Deeds were handed out, in 1849.  So in order to accomplish that they would have needed to be in Derby Twp (Canada) no later then 1844.  So perhaps Nathaniel & Elizabeths entire family were born in Cavan, up to and including Eliza (1837).  Any thoughts?
