Might you be able to help if you live in Fermoy, Cork? I aim to visit one day but for now I live in England. I am researching my family tree relating to Terence Barrett once the owner of the Grand Hotel in Fermoy. 1911 Census shows Terence aged 40, his Wife Kate P Barrett aged 21 and first born Margaret Barret aged 6 months. Terence father Richard Barrett, Mothers name not known went on to have 11 children together. I have been told Terence was the second child. I am a member of Ancestry and Find My Past but I have not been successful in finding out 1) Terence Barrett actual date of birth. 2) His Father Richard Barrett, his date of birth. 3) Richard Barrett Wifes name in full and maiden name 4) All 11 childrens full names and dates of birth. I am finding it impossible. This is why I have chosen to reach out as I hear you have been really helpful to other peoples enquiries. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
See fourth record at this link for the birth record for Terence. Mother was Margaret Hallinan https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1867/03472/2275452.pdf
Civil registration of births started in 1864. This free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has civil birth records from 1864-1919. Prior to 1864, there are only church baptismal records. I was able to locate the names of eight siblings on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Mary Teresa 1861 Margaret 1862 Bridget 1864 William Patrick 1866 John 1870 Catherine Mary 1873 Michael 1876 Celia 1880
If you go to www.irishgenealogy.ie you should be able to find the birth records for Bridget and the other children born after 1863 in the Fermoy registration district.
I was not able to find the marriage record for Richard and Margaret. There are a number of Richard Barretts born in the 1830s in Cork so I can't confirm which record may be for your Richard Barrett.

Thank you all for your kindness in helping, much appreciated. I can't thank you enough. I am lead to believe Terence Barrett was Born in 1870 or 1871 knowing he was aged 40 in the 1911 Census. With this in mind, you provided details relating to a Terence Barrett Born in 1867.
I understand this is how you found the name Margaret Hallinan. Terence siblings details you provided as seen on www.irishgenealogy.ie (below) did you find them following the name Hallinan?
As I am unsure she was Terence Barretts Mother due to the discrepancy regarding his year of birth.
Siblings seen below are they connected to Margaret Hallinan?
If so where were they Baptised, which Church and location? Does it also show a specific date they were baptised?
Mary Teresa Barrett 1861
Margaret Barrett 1862
Bridget Barrett 1864
William Patrick Barrett 1866
John Barrett 1870
Catherine Mary Barrett 1873
Michael Barrett 1876
Celia Barrett 1880
Thank you Shane Wilson for your contribution, but I am aware you have to subscribe to Roots Chat Ireland, payment is required.
I already pay for Ancestry and Find My Past, I didnt want to pay for a third website.
As I have explained already as seen above, it all seems to stem from Terence Barrets Birth discrepancy. How can I be sure the above findings are correct?

Abbie:
Ages in the 1901 and 1911 censuses were not always accurate. For example, I looked up Terence Barrett in the 1901 census and he indicated he was 38 which would make his year of birth around 1862-1863. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Fermoy_Urban/Patrick_Street/1144974/ Also, in the 1901 census, he listed a sister Cecelia age 19 living in his household. You will note in my prior message that there was a Celia born 1880 which roughly corresponds to 19 in 1901.
Terence Barrett is not a common given name and with a father named Richard which is another uncommon given name. There was only one Terence Barrett civil birth record in Co. Cork from 1864-1875 and it was the 1867 Terence in Fermoy registration district with parents Richard Barrett and Margaret Hallinan.
Below are transcriptions for the baptismal records for Mary Teresa and Margaret followed by the civil birth records for the six children born 1864 or later. That adds up to 10 children if my math is correct. Possibly there was another child. I believe all the Barrett children were baptized in Kilworh RC parish.

Thank you once again for the effort you have made, I am going to spend sometime looking at everything with a keen eye.
I have found Terence and Kate Barrett marriage details on Ancestry. Sadly no image is attached. It does highlight a Micro Film Number, does anyone have access to this???
Document seen attached for your reference.

Attached FilesTerence Barrett 1901 and 1911 Census.pdf (891.78 KB)
I have spent sometime looking at all your hard work and in agreement Terence Barrett 1901 Census is the same Terence Barrett seen in the 1911 Census.
You will notice seen attached on the third page both signatures are side by side and are identical.
I am just puzzled by his age as already stated in my previous post.
I understand his Father Richard Barrett had many business in the area, the Grand Hotel in Fermoy being one of them.
I have spent many hours looking for evidence and have yet to be successful.
Terence is seen as a Tobacconist in the 1901 Census with his sister Cecilia, any idea as to where I could find a record connecting my family to a shop?

Should anyone have the time I have been provided with a marriage certificate but the Wife's Surname is hard to read.
I have tried different combinations online Ancestry and Find My Past, sadly no joy to date.
Any ideas?

That marriage you asked about is on the free IrishGenealogy website - incudes a link to the GRO register ... Patrick Molloney and Johanna Hourigan married 8th February 1877 St. Mary's Old Parish, Dungarvan registration district, Ringville Sub-district, - see the 2nd marriage on the register page.

Third record is the 1908 marriage. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1908/10066/5661669.pdf Shane provided you with the marriage for her parents. Ironically, Katy or Katty was from Colligan Co. Waterford. My wife had ancestors from the same area. Also, note that Richard Barrett was shown a teacher on the marriage record. My guess is that Terence and possibly Richard started the Grand Hotel between 1901 and 1908 since you can see that Terence is listed as a Hotelkeeper on the 1908 marriage record.

I find myself suffering from a headache once again.
I have spent days trying to source details surrounding Terence Barrett and Kate Barrett (maiden name Moloney) who married in 1908 children.
First born seen in te 1911 Census Margaret M C Barrett.
I am aware they had a son Richard Patrick Barrett who married Mary Kearney in 1943 West Rifing, Yorkshire.
I cant seem to find anything else even though I have checked Ancestry, Findmypast, Irishgenealogy.
Any suggestions are welcome!!!

We only have access to civil births up to and including 1919 due to the 100 year privacy rule. I did not find a Richard Barrett birth record from 1911-1919 on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie Possibly he was born 1920 or later.

Roger thank you once again for your assistance. Can't find much regarding Margaret M C Barrett aged 6 months on the 1911 Census. Parents Terence Barrett and Kate P Barrett (maiden name Moloney). Son Richard Patrick Barrett was born before 1919 that's for sure in Cork. Parents got married in 1908. Other than the 1911 Census I am not able to find any documentation relating to either of them or names and birth dates of children. I really don't want to pay for a third website. I am aware of all the English options, sadly not the Irish options. Anywhere else I can look?

Roger once again I am thrilled you have kindly found Margaret Barrets birth record, THRILLED!!! I looked myself on irishgeneology and no joy. You are obviously better at this than me. Richard Patrick Barrett died aged 70 or 71 in Blackpool about 1986. I have been told he was born in Cork, exact location not known. I am lead to believe Margaret died about 14 years of age, 1925 or 26. Unable to find her resting place. I have tried multiple ways to find an answer. Roger can I trouble you to take a look on rootschat?

Abbie:
You did not say where Margaret died. I found a 17 year old Margaret who died in 1928 in Cork city at age 17 See third record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1928/04959/4349326.pdf
Can you send me a link to Roots chat?

Hello once again Roger, thank you for your efforts.
My mistake, its not "Roots Chat" but "Roots Ireland" of which I am to believe you are a paying member.
I already pay for two other websites and wish not to pay for a third.
You kindly provided me with details of Margaret Barretts death record, it might be her but I was informed she died aged 14.
I assume in Fermoy, Cork where she was living with her parents Terence Barrett and Kate Barrett,
I have not been able to find any record to establish if Margarets parents still owned the "Grand Hotel" in 1925/1926.
As seen in the 1911 Census they were.
I am not 100% sure where Margaret Barret was living at the time of death.
Thank you once again for your ongoing support and kindness.

Any ideas how can I find out who Agnes Moloney married, his surname was Devine.
Agnes Devine lived in Colligan, Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland. Her and her family owned a farm.
Agnes Devine Died in November 2008, Kilbrien Church.
She is Richard Barretts cousin and I am trying to find out when and who she married.
How many siblings did she have.
Her parents names and location. Moloney family. Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland.

Abbie:
We only have access to civil marriage records thru 1944. There is a 75 year privacy rule for marriage records. I assume Agnes was married after 1944 since I don't see an Agnes Moloney marriage to a Devine at www.irishgenealogy.ie
For births, we only have acces to records thru 1919. 100 year rule for births.

Hi Abbie. Sane & Roger. I am the great grand daughter of Richard Barrett. Terence was my grand uncle. I live in Youghal and happen to see your info as I am planning on compiling family re the Barrett shops as the one here in Youghal has been sold and it would be important to record its history. Michael Barrett (brother of Terence) had this fancy goods and tobacconist business. His daughter Mary passed away May 2019. I will root out info today as I have an article about the shops and Terence is pictured on it. Have pic of Richard, his Dad also. My email is cjfitzgerald@hotmail.com
-
To Abbie. Richard Barrett (my great grandfather) was a teacher but so was Terence and he gave it up to go into the business. Is it his son Richard Patrick who went to Yorkshire is your ancestor.

Just remembered Richard & Margaret buried here in Youghal. Cecilia FitzGerald

Can anyone help me, I am wondering how I can get in touch with Abbie who has left messages on this. She is searching for info about Terence Barrett from Fermoy and Youghal area. From Cecilia

Hi Abbie
I saw your request on the message board for information about Terence Barrett of the Barrett Family Fermoy. I recognised all the info you mentioned and I would love to connect with your as I have lots of family info. Terence Barrett was my grand uncle, a brother to my grand mother Bridget. His father Richard Barrett and Mother Margaret Hallinan were my great grand parents. They came from Newcastle West Co Limerick and he was the first school master/principal in a rural school called Kilmurry near Kilworth and Fermoy. Terence was also a trained teacher but he gave it up and went to England to train with a company for four years in the Tobacco Business. I believe he then returned to open the business in Fermoy with his sister Cecilia. The other shop is here in Youghal where I live. It was Michael Barrett, (Terence's brother) ran it and when he passed, his daughter Mary managed it all her life, she passed away in 2019. Richard and Margaret are buried here in Youghal and he died in 1908. It would be great if we could connect. I am aware that Terence's son went to England and I am wondering is that how you have a connection. Cecilia FitzGerald

Hi Abbie, I just stumbled across this thread when I googled my dear neighbour Agnes Devine's date of passing. Agnes was a great neighbour to us and encouraged my love of history. Her son Nick passed away recently I was trying to recall how long ago Aggie left us. She was married to Nicholas Devine and they had 5 children Tony, Don, Nick, Geraldine and Kieran. I know Agnes had a sister Theresa (Foley) who was married nearby. Her son Gabriel Foley still lives in Garryduff, Colligan, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford so if you get in touch I'm sure he'll have the information you need gabrielfol@gmail.com.
