Searching for Bates family in Cahir or Clonmel. Looking for my 3x grfa, Thomas Bates (b. 1830-1840?) ( d. 1899, Tewksbury, Ma, USA) We have some info that an uncle visited my grandmother's family in Ballyhaunis, Mayo in the 1960's and then went to visit the Bates family in either Cahir/Clonmel. Can not find his birth/baptism in Ireland or when or which ship he was on when he immigrated to USA. He married in Salem, MA in 1852. Death certificate says parents are William and Mary. Cannot find siblings or relations during his lifetime in USA. One interesting note is that I submitted my brother's DNA to the Bates Assoc in USA and, although close, he does not match any of the numerous family lines in the Association. Would appreciate hearing from relatives (hopefully!) or any suggestions.
Thanks in advance for any assistance. Nancy

Hello Eamonn,
Thanks so much for your time and the information you found. I'll follow up on all the names.(Especially the Beats, who knows :) )
The family in Ballyhaunis where my grandmother was born (Nora (Jennings) Bates b.1887) was/is Jennings/Cruise and I have quite a bit of info there. The Bates side would be her husband's great grandfather, so no relations there.
My big issue is the different names of parents on Thomas' birth and death certificates and, if he got married in USA in 1852, he would only be 10 years old. LOL They didn't have children until 1858 or so. I'm going to have to really dig further in MA to see if there's another Thos who married an Ann Gillan later than 1852. When I wrote to City of Salem for a copy of marriage license, they didn't have one although the church in Salem does have a marriage showing for them, but nothing further. The city said quite often the licenses weren't returned to the city and our State of MA vital records does not have one either. Again, thanks for all your assistance! Nancy

Stay safe....and thanks again!

Thank you for the information. I've checked on this and cannot find any connection. My Thomas Bates definately lived in Salem, MA, married and had children there. His parents are listed as William and Mary on his death certificate. It's unfortunate as I was really hoping to find him. Thanks again for the info!
