Hi, I am looking for a birth of a Benjamin Cook in Dublin about 1750 (I will probably be out of luck).

A possible clue/lead is that 11 Sep 1750 it looks like a possible Cook (not Benjamin but possibly James) baptism (if I am reading it correctly) with Father: Benjamin and Mother:Marg at St Catherine's Dublin (in the NLI Catholic Parish Register).

I have found a marriage Benjamin Cook to Mary Steward (? Spelling) 7 Oct 1776 at St Catherine's Dublin in the NLI Catholic Parish Register.

Kind Regards,

Wayne

  • Hi Wayne, you are probably correct but did you know you can see the actual Dublin registers transcribed here, click on church and enter Dublin, not all church records are here. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Found lots of Cookes but afraid not your man.

    Good Luck

  • Thanks Pat,

yes I have tried Irishgenealogy.ie and that might be where I found his marriage (either that or the NLI Parish Registers that I am often looking through for Irish Ancestors)

I'm not a member of rootsireland.ie though and subscription options for it don't have an  $AUD conversion of currency.

    Kind Regards,

  • Wayne, I searched Roots Ireland from 1845 to 1855 and there is no Benjamin, however there is a Cooke baptism in 1854 to a Michale Cooke and Mary Cormick, in Skerries, this is about 12 miles north of Dublin city in county Dublin, the witnesses are Richard Huddleston and Mary Gowan. there is also a Mary Cooke born to this couple and the other Dublin birht is also in Skerries but a different mother.

  • Hi and thanks,

Do you mean 1745 to 1755 instead of 1845 to 1855 as Benjamin Cook m Mary Steward (? Spelling) 7 Oct 1776 at St Catherine's Dublin and it is his birth prior to his marrIage that I am looking for (so 1750-58 is a possiblity as he would have been 18yo in 1776 if born in 1758)

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Wayne, my mistake, I searched again from 1745 to 1765 and there are 8 baptisms listed in Dublin of which 3 give no Christian name.

These are Unknown Cooke or Cook, one above in 1754; again in Skerries there is a baptism where the father is Peter Cooke and the mother is Corcoran (26th Jan 1760) here the witness's are William Culloony and Anne Cornwall and I wonder if there is a transcription error. (Corcoran and Cornwall)

23rd April 1761 no info except father is Thomas and this is Skerries again. There is another baptism in Skerries where the mother is Anne Wade father Thomas Cooke.

I do not see on Roots or Irish Genealogy the info you mention, fair play for reading the thing, however in 1775 on Irish Genealogy, no other date there is a baptism of a Thos Mulloy and a sponsor is Benjamin Cooke, parish St Andrews this is on Irish Genealogy, there appears to be more on Irish Genealogy than on Roots but it may not be the same info either. This was an RC baptism.

    Good Luck

  • Ok Thanks,

The name Thomas doesn't appear to be in the family that I'm looking for.

    Benjamin and Frederick are though.

I have noticed on Irishgenealogy.ie that there was a Benjamin Cooke buried Dublin 20 Nov 1681 St Nicholas Within and Without so it makes me wonder if my Benjamin Cooke goes back to him.

My Benjamin Cooke family is Roman Catholic.
