Bernard Brady

There are two Bernard Bradys listed in County Cavan.  (A third Bernard Brady does not file your profile.)  The two closest baptisms to year of 1810, is one born in Castleara, and baptized 24 May 1809.  I have attached his record.

The other was baptized 15 Mar 1815 in Castlerahan.  Also attached.

Bernard Brady

Boone County Democrat March 6, 1908

Bernard Brady, perhaps the oldest resident of the county and a highly esteemed pioneer resident. answered the final summons at 11:00 o'clock Tuesday night. March 3rd. at his home south of the Fift ward, after an illness of four weeks duration brought on by a slight accident to his foot last summer that resulted in gangrene poisoning. Mr. Brady had always been one of the most active men in the city ana county and had always enjoyed good health until this sickness came upon him, and in his death the community loses one of its best citizens. The funeral services will be held from the Sacred Heart Church at

10:00 o'clock this morning, conducted by Father Sunders, and the remains laid to rest in the catholic cemetery, his last resting place being within sight of his old home.

Bernard Brady was born in Castletown, County Caven, Ireland, March 16, 1810 and would have beer. ninety eight years old on the 16th of this month. He came to America in 1845 and lived for a time in New York and Pennsylvania and in 1849 came to Dubuque, lowa and the next year to Ames and shortly afterward to Boone making him one of the earliest settlers of this part of the state. He has since resided here, most of the time engaged in farming and for the past few years lived on his farm south of the Fifth ward and where he passed away. He was married to Miss Ellen Donohoe in Pennsylvania fifty eight years ago and she preceded him in death less than a year ago. To them were born nine children, two of whom, Frank and Rosa, have passed away. He is survived by five sons, Hugh, Edward, Patrick, Bernard and John, and two daughters, Mary and Kate, who are given the earnest sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.

This Bernard was born in Cavan, baptized 15 March 1815 (the obit has 16th March for birth date in 1810, but we know these dates varied in records).  He was from Carrick townland in the parish of Castlerahan (not Castletown).  His mother was called Rose, and he had a daughter Rosa. I don't know if this is your Bernard, but I thought I'd pass it along.

I had a look  at some of the U.S. censuses, where Bernard's birth year varies. The 1900 census says he was born in March 1814.

You're welcome. Keep in mind that Irish people at the time did not celebrate birthdays and sometimes did not know when their birthday was.  It wasn't a time when people were asked for their license, ID, SSN, etc.  So years in old records were often wrong.  Also, census information was not necessarily given by the person themselves; rather, it was reported by a family member, a boarder, a neighbor.  And thus, it is not completely reliable.
