Hello

I have seen on the Ships List that there was a birth on the Royal Charlie which arrived in Cape Town 31 August 1860.

Is there a way to discover who this child would be?

We have family who travelled to Cape Town on the Royal Charlie who may have had a child born during this voyage. They came from Ireland and are Catholic, so where is it likely I would find this child's birth and of those children born in South Africa (Cape Town). I know they then sailed on to New Zealand with their two children arriving Dec 1864.

Thank you, Rose

  • Hi Rose,

Can you give some details of the family like names and dates please?

I have seen births being registered afterwards in America when a child was born and died at sea, I am not sure if the same was done in SA

  • Hi Anne and list members

The family on the Royal Charlie were Daniel and Catherine McAneney (neither have second names that I aware of). Catherine's surname was Mackle.

From their golden wedding announcement in a NZ newspaper they married 23 Sept 1858 at the Catholic Church, College Land. I think this is St Peter's which is still there today.

I have established that they arrived in Cape Town on board the Royal Charlie arriving Aug 1860. There do not appear to be any children with them on the passenger list. There is a family story that Daniel and Catherine were immigrtating to New Zealand. Catherine was either very sick due to pregnancy or she had been expecting twins and lost one of them during the voage so they got off in Cape Town to allow her to recover before coming on to New Zealand.

I have also established that they and two children came to New Zealand on board the Maori in Dec 1864 with two children. The passenger list shows the children as being Thomas aged 5 years old and Anne aged 1 years old. We know Anne to be Annabella. The ages of the children may be approximate on the passenger list but this suggests that Thomas was born before or very soon after their arrival in Cape Town.

We have never found a birth certificate for my g,grandfather, John. It was thought that he had been born the day after Daniel and Catherine, Thomas and Annabella arrived in NZ on the Maori arriving 23 Dec 1860, but this could be incorrect.

Any help would be greatly appreciated with Daniel, Catherine and their children.

    Thank you Rose.
