Hello,

I am looking for information on John Bohannon and his wife, Mary Margaret Shanley (both 1813/16 to 1883/1889 approximately) in the Strokestown/Slattagh More area.

I am also looking for information on Cornelius Shanley, also of Slattagh More/Strokestown area.  He died before 1877.  I do not know if Mary Margaret is related to Cornelius and I do not want to assume...Cornelius Shanley is the father of Mary Francis Shanley, my great grandmother who married Francis Bernard Bohannon...

I know that Mary Margaret's son-in-law, Patrick Murray is listed on her death registration and her daughter is Maria/Mary Bohannon.  Her son is Francis Bernard Bohannon, and she has another daughter, Anna, who also immigrated to America.

Thank you.

  • Cindy, I can see a civil record of a Conor Shanly died in 1871 in Slattaghmore, age 51, the cert is not viewable on Irish Genealogy a free site, but on Roots Ireland a subscription site it says Cornelious Shanley age 51, landowner, present at death at Slattaghmore, Anne Shanley,  and in the notes it says named Conor, the registry area is Strokestown but the given parish is Rooskey. YOu can get a copy of hte civil registy entry for €4 and it will be emailed to you, it should be soon free to view but it has been promised for awhile now. https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ The name for ondering is Conor Shanley died Jan 1871.

It is important to see the cert especially now as I see a Catherine Shanley of the same address widow, died in 1871 also, however if this is his wife her given age is 70, so there may be transcription errrors on his side, present at death was a Barry Shanley of Slattaghbeg (this would be Slatta small whereas your one is Slatta big)  again you would have to purchase the cert, make sure you only get the €4 version as you do not need it for legal reasons when you need a certified copy.

A s we are reliant on church records pre 1864 there is a gap in may of them if they exist, I did find a Cornelious Shanly born in Bornacoola, Leitrim in 1825, father Cornelious and mother Celia Tighe, all this is too late for him to father Mary Shanley in 1813 circa. This is in Leitrim but close enough to your area, not next door but not too far if you had a car!!!

Bohannon is an unusual form of Bohan mainly found in county Clare apparently but I see it in the 1901 census and in Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s in Sligo whiich is north of where we are looking for Shanley.

In te area we are unlikely to turn up a baptismal cert for 1815 time, around the area as a generalisation most parishes only began keeping records in the mid 1820 but some earlier and some indeed later, I done a quick search in Leitrim and Roscommon 1810 to 1820 and no Mary Shanley or or records turned up. Six Shanley or Shanly baptisms turned up in that period and 5 were in the parish of Croghan and one in Athlone.

    Good Luck
