Elizabeth Latimer born abt 1827 married James Bowles (sometimes Boles) in Killesher (Fermanagh) CoI on June 14th 1849.

Her father was George Latimer (carpenter -I think); his father was James Bowles (farmer)

Witnesses were Bennet (?) Bowles and Andrew Latimer

In the 1851 Census they lived in Knockageehan, Killeshser. 6 children were born to the marriage that I'm aware of.

By 1871 the family is living in St Helens, Lancashire, but Elizabeth (Eliza) is named as head of the family. I cannot find a death record for James in England.

If anyone is able to share information about Bowles or Latimer families, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

  • This might be a sister to Elizabeth marrying in 1854. The townland looks to be the same as Elizabeth’s though I can’t work out what it is:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1854/09470/5431993.pdf

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 list a James Bowles farming in Knockageehan (plot 3) and next door on plot 4 was a John Bowles, who is likely to be related. Here’s John’s death in 1870:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1872/020747/7278597.pdf

1 Boles family in Knockageehan in 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Cuilcagh/Knockageehan/1365514/

That family was John Boles junior married to Ann Jane Wallace in 1869. John was son of John senior:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1869/11409/8189776.pdf

That family were still farming there until the 1950s anyway judging by these probate abstracts:

Probate of the Will of Anne Jane Bowles late of Knockageehan County Fermanagh Widow who died 6 November 1902 granted at Armagh to Richard William Stratearn Esquire J.P.

Bowles James W. of Knockageehan Wheathill Florencecourt county Fermanagh farmer died 28 November 1943 Administration Londonderry 26 October to John Bowles farmer. Effects £1786 6s. 10d.

Bowles, John (132) of Knockageehan Wheathill Florencecourt county Fermanagh retired farmer died 4 November 1959 at Fermanagh county Hospital Enniskillen county Fermanagh Probate Londonderry 23 May to Mary Elizabeth Holland and Emily Kathleen Holland spinsters. Effects £1487 11s. 5d.

The Valuation Revision records on the PRONI website show James Bowles deleted from plot 3 in 1871 at which time the land was amalgamated with plot 1.  That rather suggests he was dead by that date. However in the absence of a death certificate, I suspect he died 1862 – 1863 before the start of death registration on 1.1.1864. You might find his death though in Killesher’s Church of Ireland burial records in PRONI. (They are not on-line. They start in 1798).

  • Hi Elwyn

This is most useful --- once again, I thank you.

The references to Wheathill also link to another member of my Boles/Bowles family.

I'm very grateful for your time and effort.

    Kind Regards

    Sue :)

I don't suppose you have any information at your fingertips about Margaret Elliott (1783 - 1891) of Trasna Island  -- also well known as Orange Peggy due to her strong Orange ties in the area.

She is highly likely one of my ancestors too.

  • There was still an Elliott family farming on Trasna Island in 1901 (it was the only house on the island:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Ballycassidy/Trasna_Island/1363610/

Andrew married Ellen Graham from Trory in 1866. His father was William Elliott. Perhaps Peggy’s husband?

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1866/11534/8241891.pdf

Griffiths Valuation in 1862 lists Peggy as the tenant, so that indicates her husband was dead by that date. So no death certificate to be found but you might find a burial record in Trory Church of Ireland records in PRONI.

    http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/fermanagh/griffiths-valuation/parish-of-trory.php

No Elliotts on Trasna in the tithes for 1825.

The informant for Peggy’s death was Anne Jane Elliott of Trory Island who described herself as a relative. This looks to be her:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Ballycassidy/Trory/1363587/

She was Anne Jane Hamilton and married William Elliott from Trasna Island in 1877. William’s father was another William, so presumably a brother to Andrew on Trasna in 1901:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1877/11124/8072850.pdf

1911 census for Trasna has 84 year old Andrew living alone on the island:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Fermanagh/Ballycassidy/Trasna/515279/

He died there in 1921, intestate. The executrix Margaret Davies might, at a guess, be a married daughter:

Administration of the Estate of Andrew Elliott late of Trasna Ballycassidy County Fermanagh Retired Farmer who died 30 October 1921 granted at Belfast to Margaret Davies Married Woman Effects £124 8s.

PRONI should hold the probate file which would supply more information.

On Trory in 1911, William & Anne Jane:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Fermanagh/Ballycassidy/Trory/515254/

Elliott William of Trory Enniskillen county Fermanagh farmer died 5 October 1929 Probate Belfast 2 May to James Seery farmer and Thomas Rankin land steward. Effects £102 15s. 6d.

Elliott Anne Jane of Trory Ballycassidy county Fermanagh widow died 12 May 1934 Probate Belfast 9 November to Selina Elliott spinster. Effects £34 5s.

There was another Elliott on Trory:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Ballycassidy…

Administration of the Estate of Andrew Elliott late of Trory County Fermanagh Farmer who died 21 July 1904 granted at Armagh to Sara Elliott the Widow.

I’d expect he is related too:

  • Elwyn..in the 1901 census Andrew's age is recorded as 65, which fits with the birth I have in 1836.

The 1911 census says he is 84 -- perhaps his advancing years have confused him ???

    Age doc.jpg (345.1 KB)

Ages were generally just guesses. Nobody celebrated birthdays in Ireland then and errors of 10 years or more were very common. However in 1909 the old age pension was introduced for folk aged 70 and over. Ages suddenly shot up in the 1911 census as it was known the authorities sometime used census data for age confirmation purposes.

I have attached a letter which I found in parish records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast from someone in Pettigoe, Co. Donegal in 1908 writing to his Minister, asking for proof of age (ie a baptismal certificate). All he knew was that he was between “70 and 78 years of age.” He clearly had only the vaguest idea and couldn’t narrow it down to within 9 years. (The likely reason for the letter was that the old age pension was being introduced. Thus, probably for the first time in his life, establishing his age accurately became relevant to him).

  • Morning Elwyn....how interesting!! Thanks for that.

Going back to your mention of  William Elliott who married Anne Jane Hamilton in 1877-- he was born in 1855 so it would not be possible for him to be the brother of Andrew Elliott born in 1836. Andrew's father died in 1838.  I'm thinking he may be a nephew of Andrew---but now need to see if I can prove it....
