Hi

I am looking for info on the Boyd family of Tullyniskan.

In Glencon there is a Samuel Boyd,James Boyd and John Boyd in Griffiths Valuation.

I believe Samuel Boyd and his family came to South Australia in 1867.

I had a look at the valuation revision books and they seemed to have disappeared from Tyrone at about the right time.

In Blacktown there was a Robert Boyd died in 1889 and his wife Anne who died in 1902.

I also found her on the revision books when she took over the lease.

I found Anne on the Will calendars on Familysearch so it is definitely the right one.

Robert and Anne had a daughter Sarah who married a William Riddell son of John Riddell of Glencon in 1879.

I found Sarah living with her mother in the 1901 census and by this time they are both widows.

I can't find Sarah after that so maybe she remarried or died?

I found a marriage of a Jane Boyd married in Dungannon in 1867 to John Dalton daughter of a Robert but whether it is the same Robert I don't know as there is one living at Pomeroy so will have to check the revision books to see if his wife outlived him as well.

I also found a marriage of Elizabeth Boyd daughter of a Robert married in 1861 to William Townsend married in Clonoe.

I am not sure which Robert either?

The Will calendar indicates that Anne left her estate to the Rev.David Thompson Macky,Presbyterian Minister and Joseph Elliott. I'll have to check whether Joseph was Sarah's second husband.

Obviously Robert and Anne were Presbyterian.

I am looking for info on any Boyd children born or married from around Tullyniskan in the 1800's.

I do know that genealogical info is pretty thin from Tyrone but any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Rob

  • Hi Rob,

I checked the nli RC registers for Tullyniskin and they were under counties Tyrone & Armagh

I then searched www.rootsireland.ie/ for Boyd birth/baptism & marriage records ARMAGH 1800 + - 10 years and there are lots of Presbytereans - mostly from a parish called Tyrone Ditches (18 baptisms). The info on the marriage records is disappointingly limited - no parish names or religions - 13 in all

If you post the first names of the Boyds you are looking for around 1800 I can post what's there or you might want to take out a short subscription to rootsirealnd

  • Thanks Col

It's interesting that the RC register extends into  Armagh.as I found a Sarah Boyd born 1865 in Armagh to Robert Boyd and Anne McCormack on Familysearch and I would lay odds that this is the same family as mentioned in my post.

I am looking for a Robert Boyd born in Tyrone/Armagh around 1800 and an Elizabeth/Eliza Boyd about 1833.

I found a marriage of Robert Boyd to Agnes Ray in 1847 in Tullyniskin again on Familysearch and the age of Robert is 32 but I have learnt from experience that the age given at marriage is not always reliable especially if the groom was much older than the bride!!

I suspect that this Agnes was the first wife and then he married Anne. This would account for Sarah being born much later!!

If you are able I, and have the time,it would be good if you can find a Robert and Elizabeth for me.

    If not,I shall understand.

    Thanks again for your help

  • Hi Col

Thank you very much for your time to look this up for me.

    Very much appreciated.

Maybe Robert and Anne got married in the Cof I because it was the "established" church.

You have given me something to follow up on.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi,

I'm thrilled to find some information regarding my relatives.

I live in Australia and believe I am the great great grand daughter of Samuel Boyd and his family who emigrated to South Australiain 1867.

Do you have any more information about he and his family while they were in Tyrone l? Exactly where they lived as the children merely state they were born in Cookstown and passenger lists from the Canterbury merely state Tyrone.

I'm specifically looking for my great grand father John Martin Boyd born about 1863 their youngest child..

According to our information Samuel (circa 1815)  married Mary Jane Martin (circa 1815) . They had 11 children from 1838- 1863.

We have no birth or marriage records and would love any leads to fill in our family tree.

    thanks julie

  • Hi Julie,

I have been researching the Boyd families and I am confident that the family you are looking for is Samuel Boyd (1815-1903) married to Mary Jane Martin (1819-1903) If you enter the details below in your browser it will take you direct to the Family Tree in Family Search.

I started the research in Sydney in the 1980's when it entailed searching through microfische, Almanacs etc. It was put on hold when I moved to New Zealand in 1999 and I have only taken up the pursuit again  recently. At least 90% on the info has come from office registers and has been maintained on my own personal database. The tree I have started in Family Search needs to be completed as I find the time. If you wish to share info directly you can contact me on bobbul@xtra.co.nz or alternately add it to the existing tree. Hope to hear from you
