Thanks to the guidance and support from this wonderful site, I continue to take small steps in finding my family origins in Ireland. I found important information about my Great Grandfather Peter Lynch on rootsireland. Peter was baptized on July 22, 1843 at Mohera, Ballymachugh, County Cavan. His parents are Thomas Lynch and Mary Lynch. I found the Church Marriage Record for Thomas and Mary on rootsireland. They were married on June 2, 1836 in Knockbride, County Cavan.

I've also found the Church Baptismal Records for some of Peter's siblings:

Ann was baptized on May 3, 1846 in Carrick, Ballymachugh, County Cavan. I'm still searching for other possible siblings Thomas and Mary.

My next step is to find more on Peter's parents, Thomas Lynch and Mary Lynch. What makes this challenging is that they both have such common names. I've been taught that when searching in Ireland, that a general rule of thumb is that the groom is about age 25 and the bride is about 20. I've found a handful of possible matches, but want to whittle down that list.

My ask here is simply guidance in any other search strategies to utilize to find these 2 X Great Grandparents. This won't be the last time I'll be faced with this dilemma in finding my other Irish relatives.

Thanks so much for your kind assistance.

With gratitude,

Jerry

So if the couple married in 1836 then you are looking at 1811 and 1816 as possible years of births for Thomas and Mary. Like most counties, Co. Cavan has about nine RC parishes with records that go back to the early 1800s or into the 1700s. The other eighteen parishes have records starting in the 1820s or later. Ballymachugh (1837) and Knockbride (1825) have baptismal records starting later than you need.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland in Co.Cavan and the earliest Thomas Lynch baptismal record was in 1815 in Castlerahan parish so likely no baptismal record exists for Thomas. There are a number of Mary Lynch possibilities in the 1810s but without knowing her parents names, we can't confirm any of these records. We also know that her home parish when she married (Knockbride) does not have records before 1825.

You mention having a couple of possible matches so feel free to share. However, it is very likely that no baptismal records are available for Thomas and Mary.

  • Thanks for taking a look. I know how close to impossible it will be to find "my Thomas" without knowing the names of his parents. This will not stop me from trying. Here goes:

    1) Thomas Lynch, baptized 26 August 1807, Carnaross ,Meath and Cavan.

The rest come from 1821 Ireland Census Fragments.

    2) Thomas Lynch, age 11, servant, Mullagh, Cavan

    3) Thomas Lynch, age 11, Lurganlost, Castlerahan

    4) Thomas Lynch, age 11, servant, Drumderg, Lurgan

    5) Thomas Lynch, age 10, Stramatt, Lurgan

    6) Thomas Lynch, age 10, Lismacannican, Castlerahan

    7) Thomas, age 10, Brackloney, Castlerahan

    8) Thomas, age 10, Brackloney, Castlerahan.

Thanks for taking a look. I'm not giving up on this.
