Dear Sirs:  I am hitting a brick wall with ancestors from Ireland.  I would like to know exactly where they come from.  The furthest back I can get is to Liverpool when a Daniel McCarthy married a Mary Ann Moran, both were listed in later New Jersey, USA, censuses as being born in Ireland.  Their marriage registry from St. Peter's Roman Catholic church (now a nightclub) in Liverpool, married on 28 Feb 1854,  listed their addresses as Fontenoy Ave., Liverpool.  Daniel was listed as a minor, and his father's name was listed as Timothy McCarthy, both were listed as Tin Plate workers, and in later New Jersey censuses, Daniel was listed as a tinsmith in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA.  Mary Ann Moran was listed as Spinster, and her fathers name was listed as Patrick Moran, Soldier.  I have done DNA testing as have my children, whose father is a descendant of a family from Cork Ireland. I know that Daniel and MaryAnn's first child, Mary Ann McCarthy was born 27 APR 1854 in Liverpool, baptised on 7 May 1854, then the next child was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in March of 1860, a John McCarthy.  Daniel/MaryAnn McCarthy's children in birth order is, according to NJ Censuses and church records is as follows: MaryAnn born 1854-?, John born 1860-?, Thomas Francis 1861-?, Daniel 1863-?, Patrick 1867-1921, Johanna 1868-?, Timothy 1870-1907.  I am descended from Patrick McCarthy who married a Maria Gavin, born in Ireland in 1867, in Jersey city on 17 Nov 1891, Jersey City, had children named, MaryAnn, John Joseph, Timothy J., and a Thomas McCarthy. My Grandfather is John Joseph McCarthy 1894-1959.

I would like to visit ireland sometime soon and would like to know exactly where the McCarthys came from.  My one female ancestor mentioned, Maria Gavin, was born in County Mayo, the daughter of a Patt Gavin and Honora Higgins in 1867.  Evidently she had a sister, Catherine Gavin, born in Ireland who came to Jersey City also and married one of Patrick McCarthy's brothers, Timothy McCarthy, 1870-1907.

Please help if you can. Thank you, Miriam Eileen McCarthy Cochran.

  • Miriam:

There is a tree on Ancestry.com ( LindaPaxton76) which includes info on Daniel indicating that he was from Dromdrasdil townland in Fanlobbus civil parish in Co. Cork. The RC parish is Dunmanway. Parents were Timothy McCarthy and Mary McCarthy (presumably McCarthy was her maiden name).

  • Birth of Martin   6th July 1865   (It is likely this child died in infancy and the later Martin was in memory of him ,this was common in that time)

  • There is a death record for a Martin Gavin aged 4 years in 1869, it is likely this is the child above.
