My Great Grandmother, Bridget Dowling, born ~1835 appears to have come from Cloghpook. Which RC parish would that be a part of?

  • Hi

I've seen various spellings for Cloghpook. Is this the Bridget you are referring to?

Dowling Patrick 65 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic
Dowling Bridget 56 Female Wife Roman Catholic
Dowling Mary 26 Female Daughter Roman Catholic

Per a tree on Ancestry, Bridget was baptized 9 April 1841, parents- Sylvester Dowling and Catherine Morrissey. Record can be found on RootsIreland- address Clopook, parish Muckalee.

Per RootsIreland, she was married to Patrick Dowling Nov 27, 1866. They both lived in Clopoka (probably Cloghpook), Muckalee Catholic Parish, Castlecomer Civil Parish. Bridget was a servant. Both fathers had small farms.

  • Hi Mary, Many thanks for the research you have done on my behalf. "Our" Bridget Dowling emigrated to South Australia, probably in 1854, and married John Glover from Middlesex there in 1855. She had a brother Nicholas and her father's name was Thomas. So, while many or all the Dowlings you have found are very likely related, the Thomas Dowling listed on the Griffiths Valuation of 1850 (in Cloghpook) is the most likely to be her father. Unfortunately we don't know her mother's name. Here is my WikiTree page for her: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dowling-2935

  • John,

There are 35 trees on Ancestry for Bridget/Bertha. Some show Thomas Doolan and Ellen Burns as parents. They also show Thomas and Ellen died in Australia.

There is a Thomas Dowling on RootsIreland who died in 1867, age 62, farmer, in Cloapook, Tiscoffin, Kilkenny. He was married. You can find record on Irishgenealogy without the location. Tiscoffin is where Sylvester above was registered.

  • Hi Mary,

I'm aware of the site on Ancestry that shows Bridget's parents as Thomas Doolan and Ellen Burns. Trouble is, there is no proof shown that they are actually her parents. There are a number of parents I've found in parish baptisms where the father is Thomas Dowling/Doolan (we do know he was Dowling) and the daughter Bridget. To make the connection reasonably believable, we need to find the same parents also with a son baptised Nicholas.

I do get the feeling that many people simply copy other's tree data without caring if it has been correctly sourced.

Once again, many thanks for your help.
