We are searching for our ancestor Bridget Birmingham or maybe spelt Bermingham.
Her parents were Patrick (farmer) and Bridget (formerly - undescipherable but could be Cagserly or Calserly) Birmington
Born around 1858
She emigrated from Carrabane, Galway on 5th May 1877 aged 19, on the Ship Waikato bound for Canturbury New Zealand.
Any information would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located Bridget on the subscription site Roots Ireland but she was baptized in Castlegar RC parish which is near Galway city. Castlegar would be four parishes west of Carrabane. See transcription below. Her mother was Bridget Casserly which was what I thought based on the names in your message. Bridget had the following older siblings: Mary 1845 (likely died young) Mary 1848 John 1850 William 1852 Thomas 1854 I was not able to find a marriage record.

The location on the baptismal records that I saw show B. Beg. Usually priests would abbreviate Bally as B on the parish registers. The closest location I can find is Ballybaan Beg in St. Nicholas parish in Galway city.

Possibly the family migrated east in the county and reached Carrabane.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you so much for your reponce to my initial enquiry regarding Bridget Birmingham.  I am not sure if you are interested but I can provide some details to you regarding what happened to her after she reached New Zealand.  Who she married, dates and family if this is of any use for your records?

  • Hello Roger

You helped my sister-in-law previously regarding a Bridget Mary Birmingham/Bermingham.

Thank your help so far, however on looking at New Zealand marriage certificate to a John King dated 16th May 1885 (nz bdm 1885//1655) it appears her birthplace could have been Carrabrown(e) - not Carrabane, and her mothers name on marriage cert appears to be written as Calserly, not Caserly. The surname on both her marriage and death certificate appears as Bermingham not Birmingham.

Her death Certificate however, does show her mothers maiden name as Caserly.

I realise that their could well be spelling mistakes, but Bridget has signed her marriage certificate meaning she was fully literate and would have corrected any mistakes made by the Registrar.

Im just wondering if we have the correct Bridget Mary Bermingham/Birmingham and would appreciate any further information you may have in this regard.

Copies of both Marriage and Death Certs are attached.

    Thanks in anticipation.

  • Hello Prue!

To me Bermingham and Birmingham are the same surname. Likewise, Caserly and Calserly and Casserly would be the same surname.

There is a townland called Carrowbrowne in Oranmore parish which is very close to Galway city. However, Roots Ireland has the Oranmore RC records back to 1833 so a search for Bridget Bermingham with parents Patrick and Bridget Casserly would show records if they were available. The only records that come up are the Castlegar records for Bridget and her siblings.
