Hello!

I am trying to trace some of my family although I have very little definitive information.

My Paternal Grandmother was Bridget Powers.  Her parents were: Father Matthew Powers and her mother was Bridget (Quan) Powers.  She was born in the early 1860's, 1860 - 1865 and emmigrated to the USA in 1882.

I am hoping that there may be some information available such as bith record, baptism record, emmigration record, or possibly information on her parents such as their parents etc.

It would be a real bonus if somehow there were existing family members that are still in Ireland.

Thank you for any help or directions that you may be able to provide.

Thank You!

Jim Gorman

  • Hi Jim,

I have checked the subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie for a Bridget Power - 1860's. Nothing found. However, there is a "John Power" recorded as having been baptised in the R.C. parish of Carrickbeg, County Waterford. In Griffith's land valuation records it is named Kilmorelan.

Details are -  Baptism: John Power 22nd May 1856 - Father: Matthew Power - Mother: Bridget Quan. Baptismal Sponsors: Peter Power and Catherine Nugent.

Parish of Kilmorelan is in the Barony of Upper Third and Poor Law Union of Carrick-on-Suir. You can access this record on cathoicparishregisters@nli.ie - National Library. Free Site

Have you any knowledge of a County Waterford connection.

  • Jim:

So Bridget Power(s) and Patrick Gorman were from the same parish in Co. Waterford. In addition to the John Power record that McCoy located, there is a Catherine Power baptized September 14 1852 in Carrickbeg same parents.

Here is the 1864 civil birth record for Bridget Power (fourth record)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The baptismal record was also in Carrickbeg. Roots Ireland transcribed the father as Richard Power and mother as Bridget Quann. I looked at the parish register page and it is hard to tell the name. This explains (father listed as Richard) why the record did not come up when McCoy made his search.

Parents were married September 20 1851 in Carrickbeg.

  • Hi Jim,

A search of Griffith's Valuations did not show any record for a Matthew Power in Carrickbeg. A John Power is recorded who may be the father of Matthew?.

The name "Power and Quan" are recorded in the parish - Civil - Kilmorelan - Cathoiic - Carrickbeg. You can access those records at  www.askaboutireland.ie  - Free Site.

Attached a history of the parish of Carrickbeg - Source: Waterford County Museum.

  • Thank you so much.  This is terrific information.  I am aware that family folklore has always been that they came from Waterford so this is not a surprise.  It actually makes sense and it confirms the anecdotal information that I had.  I will digest this information and if I have any follow up questions I will post them.  Again, all of you effort is extremely helpful.

I am not sure if there is any way of knowing if there are any descendants of the family still in the area?

    Many Thanks!

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

The problem with tracing is 1 - The surname "Power" is in County Waterford since the 12th century when it came with the Norman's.

    2. Because of the number of families in the region with the surname "Power" and the fact that Matthew Power is not shown as a landholder, it will require some investigation.

The Civil birth record for Bridget is Motehill Road, Carrick-on-Suir.  The only sibling found is "John" -  birth 1856 - No family address.

Please see attached which may offer some hope!

The main town is in the County of Tipperary.

    Best Wishes.
