My 2xgreat uncle Francis Hanley, known as Frank, died on 10 May 1947 in Ballyleague aged 97.  He was a farmer and had lived in Ballyleague all his life.  He was married to Catherine Johnston and they had 7 children that I am aware of, most of whom emigrated to the US.  Frank was the son of Patrick Hanley and Mary Ann Connors. Patrick and Mary Ann are very elusive!  I am hoping that if I can trace where Frank was buried it may be a family grave site.  Any information or advice would be very much appreciated and, in the meantime thank you for taking the time to consider this request.  Linda

  • Hi Linda

The closest graveyard to Ballyleague would be Cloontuskert which is only a distance of about 2 kilometres. There are numerous Hanly/Hanley burials there but I couldn't see any for Francis et al.

I found 6 births for Francis and Catherine (Patrick 1875, Mary Anne 1878, Eliza 1882, Francis 1885, Peter 1887 & John 1889). As you may already know, the family appeared on the 1901 Census living at house 14 in Ballyleague (Cloontuskert, Roscommon) but there is no record for any of them on the 1911 Census.

Again, you may already know this but Patrick (the father) was farming at Lisnanarriagh (a townland in Cloontuskert) and is shown on the Grifiths Valuations at ...

and, again you may already have this,  an extract from the 1851 Census for Frank and Pat can be found here...

  • Hi Kevin

    Thanks for this, much appreciated.

Is Ballyleague completely in County Roscommon or does it sometimes come under County Longford.  I knew the river ran through creating some sort of border but have seen it listed as Longford in the past and wondered if that was correct.

  • According to all the records I have researched (Tithe Applotments, Griffiths Valuations, 1901 & 1911 Census' plus BMD records) Ballyleague comes under County Roscommon. I know that on the 1851 Census the address given is Ballyleague, Lanesboro, Longford but underneath it does say Residence - County Roscommon. A bit confusing, I know, seeing as Ballyleague, Co. Roscommon is only a mile away from Lanesborough, Co. Longford. It may well be though that the Hanley/Hanley families may have chosed to be interred in Co. Longford There are numerous garveyards there close to the Roscommon border - for instance ...

In Rathcline Graveyard, Co. Longford (1 mile from Ballyleague) there is one gravestone to Peter ( Pee ) Hanly, Born 24th January, 1934. Died 14th April, 2015.

In Clonboony Cemetery, Co. Longford (1.6 miles from Ballyleague) there is one gravestone to Ned Hanley of Barnacor who died 18 Jun 1991 (stone erected by his wife and son).

In Ballinakill graveyard, Co. Longford (8 miles from Ballyleague) there appears to be no grave stones to the Hanley/Hanly familyies.

In Kilashee Graveyard, Co. Longford (6 miles from Ballyleague) there is one gravestone to Patrick Hanly who died in 1784.

In Ballimacorick Graveyard, Co. Longford (9 miles from Ballyleague) there appears to be no grave stones to the Hanley/Hanly familyies.

In Ardagh Graveyard, Co. Longford (19 miles from Ballyleague) there are two gravestones. One to  James Clement Hanley of Richfort, Ardagh who was born 3 Jun 1911 and died 16 June 1982. On the same gravestone is his brother, Peter, who died 1st August 1988, his wife Kathleen who died 28th April 2005 and his sister Bridie who died 3rd Spetember 2016. The other gravestone is to Thomas Hanley of Richfort, Ardaghwho died 25th Dec 1945 (aged 80), his wife Mary (née Chapman) died 19th June 1966 aged 89 years and their son, Joseph, who died 7th April 1988 aged 88 years.

In Drumlish graveyard, Co. Longford (18 miles away from Ballyleague) there appears to be no grave stones to the Hanley/Hanly familyies.

There are quite a few other graveyards on the other side of the border from County Roscommon but I would suggest that they would have been much too far to go from Ballyleague (but who knows?!).

  • I have had a further look at the relationships between the various Hanley/Hanly families and they all appear to come within the Cloontuskert area.

There are 23 Townlands in Cloontuskert and the following show where the Hanley/Hanly families were residing at various times in the 19th & 20th centuries. I have attached a map to show the placing of various 'districts' where the various families were found. I always find a map useful as it gives a btter insight into gthe proximity of places.

On the 1834 Tithe Applotments John Hanly, James Hanly, Pat Hanley, Edward Hanly & Hugh Hanly occupy land at Gallough (Gallagh).

On the 1851 Census, the parents of Francis Hanly, Patt & Mary Hanly née Connor, are shown as residing at Bogwood (aka Carrowntogher).

On the 1858 Griffiths Valuations Michael, Patrick, Catherine & Bernard Hanly are farming at Lisnanarriagh.

On 1st September 1882 a Patrick Hanly (aged 74 - born about 1808) dies at Coolshaghtena. It is quite possible that this Patrick is the father of Francis.

On the 1901 Census, Francis and his family are living at house 14 in Ballyleague.

On the 1911 Census there is a Hanly family living in the area and that is Luke Hanly (b. 1852) the son of Michael Hanly. Luke married Margaret Davis on the 27th April 1891 and they had a daughter, Bridget (born 21st March 1892). The family lived at house 6 Lisnanarriagh (Lisanaria). At house 7 Lisnanarriagh (Lisanaria) lived Margaret Hanley (b. 1855) and single. At house 10 Lisnanarriagh (Lisanaria) lived the widow Kate Hanley (b. 1866) and her children James (b. 1904), Mary M. (b.1906), Kate (b. 1909) and Patrick J. (9 months old).

Michael b. 1871 and his sister Margaret b. 1879 were living at house 1 in Cloontuskert and were born to John and Mary née Cunningham.

Michael (b. 1860) and his sister Maggie (b. 1876) Hanly lived at house 19 in Cloonaddra, Cloontuskert.

John (b. 1841), his wife Mary (b. 1850) and their son John (b. 1881). They lived at house 4 in Gortgallon Cloontuskert. At house 6 in Gortgallon lived Michael (b. 1841), his brother Timothy (b. 1849) and John’s children Mary Kate (b. 1886), Thomas (b. 1887) and Eliza (b. 1892).

At house 10 in Moher, Cloontuskert there lived Michael Hanly (b. 1870) his wife Ann (b, 1868) and their children Anne Maria (b.1902), Elizabeth (b.1904), Bridget Kate (b.1906), Patrick (b. 1907), Johanna (b.1909) and Michael Joseph (10 months old).

On the 13th June 1933 Kate, Francis’ wife, dies at Ballyleague.

On the 10th May 1947 Francis Hanly dies at Ballyleague. The witness to Francis’ death was Elizabeth Feeney (granddaughter-in-law). On the 1911 Census there was a Feeney family living at house 6 in Ballyleague.

I have attached a copy of Patrick Hanly's death certificate for 1882.
