Looking for information about Patrick Byrnes who married Anne Flynn sometime around 1860. There were three children that I know of - Michael (1861?), Thomas (1868?), and Garrett (1871?). These three emigrated to Canada in the 1880's.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you have any more information that you can share, in particular with regards to place of origin? Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

You mention in your message that Thomas or Garrett may have been born in 1868 and 1871. If these birth years are correct you should be able to find their birth records in civil records as civil registration began in 1864. If you can find these records it will help you narrow down place of origin which will open up more avenues of research to you. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

Have you tried looking into the family?s emigration? Sometimes more infomation can be found at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. You may be lucky and find a place name here. For information on Canadian immigration records check http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

Burns is a very common surname in Ireland, however the spelling Byrnes is less so which may be helpful. I did a search for Patrick Byrnes in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-64. Although it doesn?t give any genealogical information it can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. 12 results came back, 3 of which are from Munster; 2 from Limerick and 1 from Waterford:

Although there is no way of knowing just yet if these are relevant at least they may offer a starting point for your search if you cannot find anything else.

  • Thanks so much, Emma Carty and Mitchelstown Cork!

I do have a little more info about my family. My grandfather's death certificate lists his father - Michael - as being from Fermoy, Cork. That's not far from Kilworth I discovered. I did find the listing you mentioned from familysearch.org for Garrett (and it does help that "Garrett" is not very common!). My question is how much stock should I put in the birthdate? Garrett listed his birthdate in the 1900 US Census as June 1871 - quite a bit different than the July 1866 listed on this record. I also found a Thomas Burns from Kilworth with Pat Burns and Anne Flynn as parents but there was a big discrepancy with that birthdate also. Thomas listed his birthdate as Dec 1867, the familysearch.org record says March 1864. Would love to accept that these are two of my ancestors but I'm just not sure.

  • Elaine -

Wow - cannot thank you enough for this information! I will definitely follow up with the church in Glanworth - and would be more than happy to make a donation.

In some of my research I did find a Thomas Flynn in that area around Fermoy and Kilworth. I'm thinking it may be that was Anne's father based on your information about naming patterns. Interesting.

I will certainly let you know what I discover - and, again, thank you so much for your help.
