I just returned from Ireland and continue to have difficulty locating baptism/marriage records anywhere in County Galway. Family records show that Thomas Carney (b:1816-1818) was married to Mary Margared Flynn and had 5 children: Mary (b:1845), John (b:1851), Julia (b; 1854), Catherine (b:1865), and Dennis (1866?).  The family left Ireland approximately 1870 after Thomas died and went to Wednesbury, England (outside Birmingham) until coming to America in 1880 (although it appears that not all came together).  John was married in England and the marriage record shows that his father was a farmer.  Any help on finding baptism records (or the marriage record of Thomas and Mary) would be appreciated.  While in Ireland, I spent several hours in the Tax Assessor's office (inDublin) with Griffith's Valuation and the "cancelled books" thereafter.  It seemed pretty conclusive that my great-great-grandfather Thomas Carney had a small leasehold just north of Ballinsaloe.  It was in Kilgerril Civil Parish, and the parcel had a "RC Chapel" on a subdivided portion.

Does anybody have any history on any of these people?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal/birth records for children of Thomas Carney and Mary Flynn. Likely they belonged to a RC parish that does not have records back to 1865. There is one parish north of Ballinasloe that has records starting in 1892. What civil parish did you find Thomas Carney in the Griffiths?

  • To Roger McDonnell:  Note that I have edited the Post to include Kilgerrill Parish where the family plot was located.  I also used Roots Ireland and was unsuccessful in finding any baptism or marriage records.

Since then:  I used the link you sent and was able to identify a baptism of a child from a family that lived with my family - which was identified by Brendon who is on this chain of posts.  Apparently, based upon Griffith's Valuation, our families were neighbors and I hope to find more information.  Please let me know if you have any ideas - apparently they lived within 5 km of Ballinsaloe.

  • Sorry Roger - I spelled your name O'Donnell instead of McDonnell.  My short-term memory failed me:)

  • Hi Bob!

No problem! I get O'Donnell a lot and actually one of my great-great grandmothers was an O'Donnell from Donegal.

Here is the link to the parish register for Fohenangh/Kilgerrill RC parish https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0331   The index says reocrds from 1827-1877 but I think that there are gaps in the records based on something I saw on Roots Ireland. Any way you may want to scan the register.

  • I have info. on Thomas , not sure of his wife, I do know a possible woman, her name was  of  a Flynn family who lived on a small estate that Thomas work on. In 1855 he had a         house  and a very small garden . during the Famine a unkown no. of people died.

there are no proper records. there is no  knowing of what happened to Flynn family.           Hopefully, she survived  the Famine  to marry Thomas Carney, There was practically no    records of births or marriage.s in our parish from some  careless priests from early 40 is. .to 1880s . What is unusual is there was two more Thomas Carney:s, in the parish, all three where of the same ancestry-- the first was-Thomas Carney m. Bridget Scott.                  the second-- Thomas Carney m Bridget Hardiman .--  those family,s also did emigration. to USA. I think . perhaps your family also went to USA  I know  one family  in my time who told me, what  his grandfather told him , they lived alongside on two Landlord houses,  they were hoping their large family. would get the vacant  house and farm.  perhaps your family went with them..    my name is Brendan Donelan ,  Killure Mor is part of the same parish as Kilgerril. I'm available to answer questions on Thomas Carney's people anytime.

  • Thank you Brendan - this is very helpful and I would very much like to communicate with you more, possibly by direct email (but posting here is also OK, whichever you prefer.  It wasn't clear from your note if you currently live in Ireland or elsewhere.  Please let me know how I can best stay in touch with you.

AS A FOLLOW UP:  I checked the Griffith's Valuation again, along with the information I obtained from the "cancelled books" at the Tax Assessor's Office in Dublin and think that my ancestors' property was next to properties where your ancestors were tenants (same last name as yours on several parcels).  It was Parish of Kilgerrill as noted, but additional information:  about 4 km. north of R 348, 5 km NW of Ballinasloe (just west of "Killure Bog" and east of "Crit Island").  A RC parish and graveyard is also shown on map as nearby.  There were no numbered roads in the immdeiate vicinity.

Does that sound right?  Is this the parcel you were referring to and were your ancestors neighbors of mine?

Thanks again for any help you can give!  Robert Carney, McLean, Virginia USA

  • My great grandfather's family is just like yours, but his name was Patrick.  His parent and siblings are just like the ones you listed.  His family went to Wedesbury, England.  I do not why he is not listed.  My cousin did research on the family.
