Greetings all,

My grandfather, Joseph Patrick Carr born 15 Feb 1889 in Castleblakeney emigrated to the USA in 1907 with his sisters.  I am trying to secure his birth certificate and baptismal records and I'm not sure where to find it.  Have not had much luck on-line.  Please advise of the local parish where the baptism might have taken place and also where I might be able to secure his civil birth certificate.

Thanks very much,

Ed A. Carr

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Are you pursuing Irish citizenship? I searched www.irishgenealogy.ie for a civil birth record for Joseph Carr in the Mountbellew registration district which includes Castleblakeney. The only record located between 1880-1892 is an 1885 record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

Do you know the parents names? Thomas Carr and Ellen Lohan?

Here is a possible 1901 census record for the family where Joseph was shown as Patrick.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Castleblakeney/…

Once we locate the image of his civl birth, you can write to the General Register Office https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx  to get a certified copy of the birth record for twenty euros plus postage.

Once we find the right record, we can determine the likely church for his baptism. It might be Ahascragh/Caltra.

    Please advise.

  • Good afternoon Roger,

Thanks so very much for your assistance!

My great-grandfather's name was Thomas Carr. According to Joseph P. Carr's death certificate it listed his dad as Thomas and his mother as Helen which is close to Ellen. However, I believe the surname the Rhode Island death certificate shows is Mullen not Lohan. My grandfather was indeed in Ireland in 1901.  Not sure if the record you sent me is correct.

When we visited Castleblakeney about 7 years ago, we learned that Joseph immigrated to Boston in 1909 with several sisters as he was the second born male and was not entitled to inherit the peat farm land in Castleblakeney.  Not sure if Joseph's father,Thomas, died around this time.  Several years after Joseph's arrival to the USA, Joseph's oldest brother passed away and the land (peat farm) went to his wife's family the Farrell's as the Carr's had all immigrated to the USA.  The Farrells told us the story of how the Carr land became the Farrell's land.  The Farrells' seven years ago owned I believe a lumber yard/home improvement facility which we visited in  Galway or nearby in Rosscommon.  I've looked online for the Farrell location and have not been able to find anything.  Not sure if this can help.

Please advise if you have any other suggestions.

    Manny Thanks,

    Ed A. Carr

  • Good afternoon Roger,

Thanks so very much for all of your assistance.  I've looked through each of the links and have also spent time looking on the various websites for any additional information to prove that Ellen Lohan is indeed Helen Mullen as listed on Joseph Patrick Carr's death certificate in Rhode Island, USA.  I am hitting a brick wall and was wondering if you had any other suggestions?

    Many thanks,

    Ed A. Carr

  • Birth of Thomas Carr 12th June 1871, parents Thomas Carr and Ellen Mullen

Birth of Patrick Carr 20th March 1884, parents Thomas Carr and Ellen Mullen.

If you require an official birth certificate for legal purposes you can order one using the process described in option 2 on this link, these official certs. cost approx. €20.

p.s. Rathbaun/Rabane townland as mentioned on both these certs., and the census return posted by Roger, is located adjacent to the town of Castleblakeney - see Rathbaun/An Ráth Bán entry on the placename database.

  • in case you need the index references at any stage :

    Thomas Carr / Record Type: Birth / Year : 1871 / Registration District : Mountbellew / Volume :9 / Page 473
    Patrick Carr / Record Type: Birth / Year - Quarter : Jan-Mar 1884 / Registration District : Mountbellew / Volume : 4 / Page 365

I also found the marriage for Thomas & Ellen in the RC parish of Killian (aka Killian & Kilronan / Ballygar, Newbridge) on the 4th July 1869. See the 4th entry on this page (National Library of Ireland). Ellen's name is shown as Elleana - a Latin version of the name Ellen/Helen
