My question relates to a  Carty family from   Ballinamona, Killascobe parish.  I'm aware there were a  number of Carty families in this area.  I'm  trying to trace the parents of Pat Carty (born circa 1820, died 1871).  Also,  I  have a date of death for Pat's wife, Bridget Gavin Carty, but can't  locate a primary source for this record.  I haven't  found it on the Irish Genealogy site.   I'd appreciate any help with this.

I found the surname Melody spelled Mylott in Killascobe parish in the 1830s and again a few decades later.  A will helped me make the connection.  This fact may help those seeking Melody ancestors from this parish.

Thank you,  B. Alcorn.

  • Hi Breda

The Cartys would be in Moylough parish in the 1820s

The Skehana part was put with Killascobe in the early 1840s and a new parish Menlough was created

I gave you a link last week to the East Galway Genealogy group on FB which will allow you to connect with your 2nd cousins on that side who will provide info

Possibly you don't do FB so these are your Carty family contacts

Addresses : Pat Carty, Ballinamona, Menlough and James Quirke, Abbert, Monivea

Likewise the Mellody family in Guilka would have been Moylough then Menlough parish

In Griffith's the family of your great grandmother , my mother's aunt, were Mellody - the rest of the extended family Mylott

Similarily your great great grandfather was recorded variously as Mylott and Mellody

The DNA matches with the family are spelled primarily Melody / Mellody

    Hope that helps

    Martin

  • Hello Martin,

thanks for that.  I'll  get in touch with Pat Carty to see if I can go back  another generation on that side.   It would be nice to go further than  2x g g grandparents.  You're  right, I don't  do Face Book so thanks for the address.  I hope that a DNA test will help me fill in more gaps later on.
