Hello.  I'm looking for information on my great grandparents.  They were from County Louth, Castle Bellingham.  Their names were Christopher Garland and Mary McConville.  Does anyone have any info?  Thanks

  • HI, Would you provide more info, particularly the approx. years of their births and marriage? Did they marry in Ireland? Did they have children in Ireland, and if so, what were their names/years? Thanks.

  • Hello as Patricia says we need more information on dates etc, the name is found in that area and there are other queries on the site about it, it has a few local variants, Gartland and Garlandy which are often used within the same family. So some dates and we will see what we can do. Regards Pat

  • As a possible starting point - FamilySearch has a record transcript for the death of a child named 'Edward Thomas Garland' in Brooklyn, New York in September 1930, the parents of this child are recorded as Christopher Garland born Ireland and Mary McConville born Scotland.

see (you need a free FamilySearch account to access this) : https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WVT-MHP

Findagrave has a possible lead - a headstone in Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, Virginia to a Christopher Garland of Castlebellingham, Co. Louth died 28th January 1981 with reported date of birth of 15th April 1895, with wife name has been noted on the FindaGrave entry as Mary ... the entry doesn't have a photo so it's not clear if his place of birth is actually mentioned on the headstone..

  • Found a probable match for this family on the 1930 US Federal census - address is 757 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, which matches the address on the death - basic details are as follows :

Christopher Garland, age 35 born Ireland, immigration year 1923 occ. Porter
Mary Garland, age23, born Scotland, imm. yr. 1921, occ. home-maker
(son) John age 1, born New York

also Patrick McConville age 27, and Edward McConville age 22, both arrived 1921 (same as Mary) described as 'Brothers' both born Scotland one a policeman the second a motorman.

A transcript of this should also be available on FamilySearch, they should also appear on other US census returns.

  • Thanks everyone. Christopher Garland was born in 1895 in County Louth. Mary McConville was born in 1905. They moved to NYC but I'm not sure if it was before or after they were married. I was actually hoping to find out if we still had any relatives in the area. I may need to do some family research :)

  • A couple of items that may help your search :

Birth of a Christopher Garland 14th April 1895, place of birth Castlebellingham, parents Michael Garland and Anne Callan
Reported ages on death certs, census returns etc are often inaccurate - this one just one day out from the headstone, so definitely worth checking out, see (see entry 30 in the register) : https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/87cf…

This Garland family on the 1911 census : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Louth/Castlebellingham…

There's a possible match for a McConville family arriving at Ellis Island in 1921 on the Cameronia, father John widower, occ. coal miner, and 8 children, including Mary Patrick & Edward, as per that 1930 census form. There's a promising match for Christopher in State and Federal Nationalization records - he reports his birth date as 15th April 1896, arriving 1st November 1923 (matching that 1903 return) on the Ship Celtic, age 27, birthplace Castlebellingham, his family in the 'old country' is noted as his father, unhelpfully noted as simply 'Mr. Garland', his US contact is a sister (not named) of 1335[middle digits unclear] Madison Ave., NY

Given the arrival details I would suspect that your Christopher and Mary married in the New York area somewhere in the mid to late 1920s..
