I am looking for information on James Cavanagh’s birth/baptism information (circa 1800) to identify his parents. I am not sure if he was born in Limerick or Waterford County (where the Cavanaghs came from). His mother is possibly Ellen (found in Tithes Aplotment in 1826) and his father is possibly Daniel (found with a James Kavanangh in Dollas in Griffiths Valuation). There is a James Cavanagh whose birth information is in St. Michael's in Sept 15 1799 (from Roots Ireland).

James left Ballingarry until 1847 and went to Fedamore/Skule area (where his two children married in 1849 and 1852). This occurred I believe because the weaving industry in Ballingarrry ended in 1845. James died in Fedamore in 1870. I also need to verify James’ wife’s name through a marriage certificate. She died before he and the children went to Fedamore—but she was born in Crecora.

James also took with him to Fedamore his two children, Elizabeth (b. 1829) and Patrick (b. 1827).  I would love to find birth/baptism information on the children to verify their mother’s name, etc.

Though both Roman Catholic, James’ daughter—Elizabeth--married John Hayes on 17 Jan. 1849 in the Church of Ireland, Fedamore Parish.  They had four daughters: Catherine (b. 1850), Johanna (b. 1855), Mary (b. 1859), and Bridget (b. ?). I have information on Catherine (who married Michael Ahern 20 Nov. 1874 and immigrated to Argentina in 1889 on the City of Dresden); but I need  more information about Johanna, Mary (who had a son named John Roache and who also may have immigrated to Argentina with Catherine), and Bridget (who married an O’Connor from Bruff).

Also: John Hayes’ father is Denis Hayes (who is also listed as a weaver on John’s marriage certificate and who is also listed on Griffiths Valuation with James Kavanagh in Ballingarry—near Dollas). I have found one birth record for a Denis Hayes with the father Daniel (as well as another birth record for a brother named Daniel—both sons of Catherine O’Dwyer who were born in 1798 and 1800), but I don’t know if this is the right Denis—meaning the father of John who married Elizabeth Cavanagh.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Hi Fran,

Thank you very much for your message.

It may be difficult to find James? birth certificate without a more exact place of origin. Civil registration sis not begin in Ireland until 1864 so it is necessary to look at Church records for information on births, marriages etc. however, most church records are still held locally, which is why knowing the parish of orign is so important.

With regards to the girls? birth/baptism records, if they were born in Ballingarry you can search the church records there for their records. As I mentioned earlier most Catholic records are held locally so it may be a good idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website which you may find useful, however, is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. FOr Ballingarry parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=West%20Limerick&parish=Ballingarry&churchid=863

You could try searching for James marriage certificate in these records also, however as his wife was born in Crecora it is possible that this is where the marriage certificate is. Generally, a couple got married in the brides home parish. To see what records are available in Crecora/Mungret parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=East%20Limerick&parish=Mungret&churchid=879

It may also be an idea to contact the Limerick Genealogy Centre for assistance. They may be able to help you with James? birth certificate and also they may have copies of some church records. However, a fee may apply for their services. Here are their details:
