My search for my Irish roots has been a long frustrating ordeal. The existing records here in America indicated he (John Boyd) was born in Ireland around 1845. From his marriage record his parent were John Boyd and Margaret Robinson. Family lore has him as a proud Ulsterman from county Down. I assumed that was a reference to his place birth, but years of attempts to verify that fact proved fruitless. I widened my search parameters and found a promising record of baptism with the right parents first names within the date range.  It appears that my immigrant 'John's dad was in the army, that would explain him being born in county Cork rather than county Down,

So, the recorn of baptism (from the Mallow Heritage Centre) has his place of baptism as 'Barracks' , Parish/Dstrict: Brigtown, Church of Ireland, 20-Aug-1843, by the Rev R.H. Graves.

My question is which 'Barracks', Cork has several 'Barracks' and if I can narrow it down I might be able to locate his dad's military records, plus his dad's occupation is listed as Private 1sr Royals.

Any further informatio as to which barracks, the 1st Royals and other church records would be appreciated.

  • Hi Robert,

    It may be that the record refers to Brigown, which is in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. It might be worth asking Mitchelstown Heritage Society do they have any information https://www.facebook.com/Mitchelstown-Heritage-Society-290821344261231&…;

    They may be able to check to find the name of the Reverend.

    The Old Church of Ireland in Brigown is now St. George Arts and Heritage Museum https://www.saintgeorgesmitown.com/?fbclid=IwAR1nuvVSm4I1Gocc6A8hv9rgg0… Perhaps give them a message too to make contact!

    Good luck!

  • Hi Robert,

    there wsa a small military barracks in Mitchelstown, built in 1823 and burned during the Civil War in 1922.  You will find details of historic sites in Mitchelstown, with accompanying map if you Google 'map of Mitchelstown' and can see where that barracks was located.  This is the link on Google that will lead to that map etc:     09_mitchelstown-cork-ireland-historic-map-brochure.pdf

    There was a much larger barracks in Fermoy, the neighbouring town, but if the birth record states 'Brigown', then it is Mitchelstown it refers to.
