I am trying to trace my Irish roots.  My Great Grandmother was Annie Josephine Clancy born in London Eng to Irish parents possibly 1860/63.   Her mother’s maiden name may have been Kelly. Annie came to Canada and married 1877 then moved to New York City. She ended up in Ontario Canada with all my family.   She was.married twice and also a surrogate to a couple who couldn’t conceive. I have Dna matches to all 3 branches of her descendants’ families.   I have shown DNA links to names from Dingle,Kerry. Those names include Garvey, Fitzgerald, Guiheen, Manning, Falvey, Cronin, Murphy and also other DNA matches to Cork area, O Connor, Dillon/Dillane. Those are just some of the names.  They all seem to tie in to Annie’s family. However,  the name Clancy doesn’t appear much. .  Any assistance would be appreciated.  I am On  genmatch too a long with my sister and 1st cousin.

  • Hi Tammy, the DNA can be confusing indeed in my experience, while I cannot directly assist you I may be able to assist with some information, I have Glancy in my line which is a variant of Clancy, I recently attended a DNA lecture by a Paddy Waldron who I think has lectures on You Tube, he informed me there are 3 Clancy branches of Clancy names in Ireland, one in Leitrim (My lot) One in Clare (maybe your lot) and I think either Galway or Mayo. He also manages a Clancy name project on Family Tree DNA which I keep meaning to join, you can upload you DNA there it was free but will not be too expensive either way I hope. You then join the family research you want to.

There is a Matchbox type tool on some private Facebook pages by county or area, there is also an Irish DNA Registry page which has a lot of members, the down side is there is a lot of duplication as people myself included join many if they are unsure of exact location. People are very nice on them and they are well moderated but not always the most helpful as everyone is working at the outer reaches of records but they at least usually respond and offer to try. Most counties have these FB type pages for history and genealogy but not all do the DNA thing but usually have a Gedmatch register page.

    Good Luck,

Hi Pat, Thanks for the info.  I have done the Facebook group and didn’t have anything jump out at me right away.  I also signed up for the Irish DNA registry page.  I did find today, a DNA match that changed my direction on a group of matches. I thought I was showing matches for a line of O’Donnells, but with this new distant match, I just confirmed that we are actually connected through Bresnahan and Flaherty.  Now I’m off to search that group.  I have to add that to my list of names and remove the O’Donnell.

I’ll check out the 3 different lines too.

    Thanks

  • Update.

I think I may have located my Clancy ancestor.   I have a marriage record from Islington, Middlesex, England of Michael Clancy marrying Margaret Heffern (probably Heffernan) both from Ireland in 1854 Michael's age was 19 so he was born about 1834/35.  Michael's father is listed as Daniel Clancy, Carpenter. Margarets' was Michael, farmer. My Great Grandmother was Johanna Clancy born 1860 to Michael Clancy and Margaret Heffern in Islington, Middlesex, England.

I found a Daniel Clancy from Castleisland who was a carpenter, and his wife, Johanna Moore married 1825 in Castliesland.  I also found others records of sons born to them, James, John, Daniel and Patrick.  I did not find a Michael born to them though.   I wondered if maybe Daniel could be Michael?  Daniel was born in 1835 or 36. I found the original register in nil and it does look like Daniel. Funny thing is there are 2 Daniel records baptised of him.  One June of 1835 and the other Jan 1836. That's only 6 1/2 months apart, so too far to be a child that died.  1st one is hard to read the actualy name.

Just wondered if anyone has knowledge of Daniel and Johanna.  Johanna and Daniel both died in 1871. Johanna 1st in Castleisland and Daniel later in Tralee.

    Thanks

    Tammy
