Hello, I am looking for any information regarding the families of John Clancy b.1828 Charleville, Cork and his wife Mary Cronin b.1834 Cork [possibly also Charleville].

They married in England [John indexed as Clanchy].  Johns parents were Michael Clancy [a wheelwright] and Johanna Mahony.  Marys parents were Daniel [transcribed in one document as David] Cronin and Bridget [possibly Whonehan].

John and Mary stayed in England.

Johns siblings were Joseph b.1830, Maurice b.1834, Catherine b.1842 [died young] and Catherine b.1845 ALL CHARLEVILLE.

Marys siblings were [if I have the correct person] Mary b.1830 [died young], Denis b.1836, Honora b.1839, Catherine b.1841 and Margaret b.1845 ALL CHARLEVILLE.

If anyone knows anything about these siblings or is related to them I would love to know.

I'm aware of the wealthy Clanchy family in Charleville in Griffiths etc but I think it highly unlikely my family is related to them, unless anyone can tell me differently!

Thank you in advance for your help,

Gabriella

    Hi Gabriella,

Thank you for your message. i hope that someone with information on the families makes a connection with you.

Have you tried looking at church records in Charleville for information? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Charleville parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20North-West&parish=Charleville&churchid=32

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

Civil registration became mandatory in 1864, so you may also be able to find records relating to the family in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any Clancy?s and Cronin?s in the area at the time? You can search these here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other websites that you may find helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

It may also be an idea to contact the Mallow Heritage Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: mallowheritagecentre@gmail.com

I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Alex,

hello, I must apologise as I have only just discovered that I had email notifications turned off for this site, so I have only just seen your reply.

Thank you for getting back to me, albeit almost two years ago!

I am aware that John was in the workhouse, I have searched online for workhouse records, but so far have had no luck.

I have a copy of the church baptism records for both John and Mary [I am almost certain they are correct].

I also have a copy of their marrige entry from the Roman Catholic register [on CD] giving their parents names, I am more than happy to send you copies.

My email is shortiegml@hotmail.com I am more than happy for you to drop me a line.

Here's hoping you don't have email notifications turned off :D

    Best Wishes, Gabriella
