Hello,

I am researching my great-great grandparents Louis Clark (born ~1820) and Emily Tully (Born~1830) who married on 04-March-1849 in County Galway at MountBellew;  Parish District: MOYLOUGH/MOUNTBELLEW; Witnesses: M Ryan & Mary Tully.

This information was found on RootsIreland

They emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania soon after their marriage

I believe that this was probably Emily's parish by tradition (They were Roman Catholic), but they could also have married there before departing from Galway (?).

I have not been able to trace them back any further in Ireland, so I am looking for any leads you could suggest.

Thank you very much

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the baptismal records for Moylough/Mountbellew RC parish start in 1848 according to Roots Ireland  so if Emily and Louis were from that parish, records will not be available.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Moylough civil parish shows a number of Clarke and Tully residents. Likely some of these individuals are connected to Louis and Emily. All of the Clarke records are for Belderny South townland so there is a good chance that Louis was from that townland.

  • Hi Dan

I live in Mountbellew and am admin of the neighbouring Killascobe parish

I see the record is digitised in the parish records and has Mountbellew as the address for Luis Clark - I have not been able to find the page in the actual parish book online that it was recorded from - available at registers.nli.ie (Parish Moylough)

Have you done a DNA test ?

There are a number of Tully and Clarke descendants in the area who have tested and it would be good to see if you match

I admin the Mountbellew PLU FB group and would welcome you to join

  • Hello Martin,

Thank so much for your reply and information. I did look at the Griffiths Valuation records as Roger suggested and there were both Clark & Tully families listed as living in Moylough. I could not get any further with this data however, I had no way to make a connection to Emily Tully or Luis Clark.

I have done a DNA test (23andme), they list me as 80% British and Irish with strongest Irish signals in County Dublin, Cork and Galway(!), Mayo is listed 5th also close to Galway.

I would be glad to join your groups and share information; Please pass along the details of steps I need to take.

    Thanks again

Bes thing is to upload your raw DNA data from your test to the free site gedmatch.com

Most people in the area have done an Ancestry test and gedmatch will allow a compasrion
