Hi,

I am looking to find some parish records for my ancestors.  My g g grandfather Thomas Connerton was born in Westmeath in 1854.  I believe he had a brother called Matthew who was born 10 years earlier.  Their father was Denis Connaughton.  The surname was spelt like this in Westmeath but when the brothers moved to Dublin they spelt it Connerton.  I have tried to find their parish baptism records on Irish Genealogy with no success.  On the Griffiths Valuation I found Denis Connaughton in Kilcleagh parish which is where I believe they came from.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Janice.

I assume your relatives were Roman Catholic.

The Mormon Church has microfilmed Roman Catholic church records for the area around Kilcleagh parish and they go back to the time period that you have interest. You can read the descriptions of the two films and decide which one  (or both) are of interest. Their web site is www.familysearch.org and you can order the film(s) online from Salt Lake City and have them sent to a local Family History center hopefully near you in the UK.

  • Hi,

Just an update on my previous message.  I thought Thomas and Matthew were brothers but after applying for Matthew's marriage record I see his father was Darby Connerton and not Denis so I can only assume they were cousins.  I found Darby on Griffith's Valuation in Westmeath.  Connerton doesn't seem to be a common surname going by the 1901/1911 census, I'll shall keep digging!
