John Joseph Murphy (tailor) – born about 1861 died 31 Dec 1911 - and his wife Mary Deasey were recently added as ancestors. They were married 4 August 1878. Thomas Murphy also a tailor has been added. As both worked in the same tailoring shop in Marlboro Street in the early 1900s I am seeking a possible family connection.

As John Murphy’s children all migrated to New Zealand, I am wondering if Thomas Murphy’s relatives also migrated or are they to be found in Ireland now. So far I have been unable trace John Murphy’s father (family tradition has him as a Michael) and its possible Thomas Murphy was John’s uncle.

John Joseph Murphy was for 1901 Census at House 14, Military Road, Montenotte, Cork.

The 1914 Census has most of the family at Alta Villa, Lower Glanmire Road, Montenotte, Cork.

Thomas Murphy (possibly born about 1843) was for the 1911 Census at Alta Villa, Lower Glanmire Road, Montenotte, Cork.

It would be exciting to find some lead to linking John and Thomas, they worked at the same tailoring establishment – were they related – did they both originally come from St Finbarrs South – are there descendants of Thomas that related to John’s in New Zealand?

The father of John Murphy was Michael Murphy and the mother of Mary Deasey was Michael Deasey. Info was part of the church marriage record. I was unable to locate a civil marriage record.

Can you share the 1911 census record for John and Thomas Murphy at Alta Villa Lower Glanmire Road. I found a John Murphy on Lower Glanmire Road but he was a commercial clerk. Did Thomas Murphy marry?

I was going thru the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie trying to find John Murphy's baptismal record but I found at least eight possibilities in Cork city mostly in Cork South parish.

  • Thanks Roger. I am attaching John Murphy for 1911 (Lower Glanmire Road) , and also the possible tailor relative Thomas Murphy for 1911 (House 15 Evergreen Road).

I see a Michael Murphy married a Bridget Murray 12 Jan 1860 that might be John Murphy's parents also attached. Again thanks so much for looking into. Regards Denis Williams

I figured out that Thomas Murphy and John Murphy were not brothers. The 1911 census for Thomas Murphy shows a son Mathias which is an uncommon name. I searched on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for his birth record and located the record in 1884. His mother was Teresa Warren. I then found the Thomas Murphy/Teresa Warren marriage record and the father of Thomas was Mathias so Thomas and John were not brothers. Possibly Thomas was an uncle to John. What is unusual is that the 1911 census record shows a son Thomas Patrick who was 34 which makes his year of birth around 1876. The marriage to Teresa was in 1880 and Thomas did not state that he was a widower. Possibly Thomas adopted Thomas Patrick??

I also found that Teresa Warren Murphy died in 1888.

So I eliminated brothers but can't determine how Thomas and John relate.

  • Thanks Roger.  I have also now established that Thomas Murphy (b 1845) was the UNCLE of John Murphy (b1861). Thomas had a brother Michael (b.1839) who was the father of John Murphy. So we have John working in his uncle's tailoring business - along with most of the family.   Incidentally I was able to trace some of the Murphys on Thomas Murphy's 1911 census form.
Thomas (b 1845) and Michael (b 1839) were both baptised in St Finbarrs South Parish - Their parents were Timothy Murphy and Mary Connell (married 1838).
Your comment on Thomas Patrick Murphy is possibly resolved - (see South Parish baptism 11 January 1877) .  Father Thomas Murphy, Mother Catherine Kelly.

I will update ancestor records for John and Thomas in due course.

    Regards Denis
