John Corrigan lived in Breagho townland in the parish of Enniskillen. He migrated to New Zealand in 1864/5 and lived near Auckland. Around 1876 he moved to Kumara and married Mary McMahon in 1877. She was from Manorhamilton. He was a gold miner. They moved to Tasmania in 1892 and again he was a miner on the west coast. I have good detail on John and Mary and their descendants fro mthe time they arrived in Tasmania. I would like more detail on John's parents, grandparents etc in Ireland.

The Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted in Co. Fermanagh in 1862. There were four Corrigan head of households listed in Breagho: James, Michael, Terence and Thomas. I assume one of those four was the father of John.

I would look for Church records if available to try to determine who was the father of John.

By the way, looks like many of the Corrigans left Breagho over the years because in 1901 there was only Margaret Corrigan a 50 year old widow living in Breagho.

  • Hi Roger,

I'm not sure if I replied to your message of earlier this year. I find the Reaching Out site is not terribly easy to use and even difficult to know if messages are actually forwarded or when new maessages have arrived etc. Enough negatives as the bgger picture is that the project is a great initative. So, thanks for your meassge re John Corrigan. John's death cert in Aust says his father was Thomas and his mother Mary Ann. Hence, of the 4 Corrigans you found from Griffiths it would seem that his father Thomas was still living in Breagho in 1862. Presumably, Margaret in 1901 was the last remaining relative living in the area. My wife and I did visit the Breagho area back a couple of years ago, but didn't allow ourselves enough time to find landmarks like Breagho Bridge etc. Its a tricky little area to find locations.

    Thanks for your help.
