I saw a message which I cannot now locate from "Eustace" asking about the burial place of his Grandfather Patrick Costello (son of James Costello and Judith Murnane--although I was always told that James' wife was called Johanna Murnane) and Patrick's wife Ellen Ryan.
Eustace--you are my cousin! My mother (your first cousin) was the only daughter of Denis Costello (b. 5 March 1900--third child and second son of Patrick Costello and Ellen Ryan) and Bridget Costello of Cahir, near Thurles.
Denis and Bridget met as servants, he a chauffeur and she a cook, in the Barrymore Manor House before my Grandfather began driving a lorry for the lactogen factory." My Mother (Ellen, called Nellie, born 1922) and her brother (Pat) were both born in Tipperary. Denis (my Grandfather) and his family left Ireland in approximately 1927, emigrating to Australia.
My father was a GI from Alabama during the Second World War. He met my Mother in 1945 at a Red Cross dance and they married a month after VJ day. My Mother emigrated a second time to the United States after having their first child (my eldest brother) in Australia. My parents had nine children, all still living, of whom I am #5. Our surname is Balthrop. My Uncle Pat is still living near Sydney in Australia. He is 95, I think.
I don't know the burial place you asked for. But I know some things about the family history, learned directly from my Grandfather, who lived with me near the end of his ever-hearty and healthy life. "Denny" died on January 24, 1981.
I know the families of some of Denny's 10 siblings:
Johanna (the eldest) (married Jim Brady, settled in Kirkintilloch, nr. Glasgow, Scotland--had a large family most of whom I have met)
Jim (the second) (his wife died before I met him but I have met his children)
Denny (third) -- my Grandfather
Rose (married in Tipperary although the name escapes me just now)--two daughters Mary and Nellie still in Tipperary
Annie (married Frank Monks, settled in Howth, had five or more children, several of whom I used to know very well)
Mary (married Andy Hudson, settled in Dun Laoghaire, had a large family whom I used to know very well)
Nellie (married Mick Malloy, settled in Dun Laoghaire, seven children, whom I know). When I went to Trinity in Dublin, in 1974-75, I lived with Aunt Nellie and Uncle Mick.
Paddy (married Mary, settled on the farm at Cordangan, died as you described in your post. One daughter, Elieen, married name Carey, still living at Cordangan, three daughters.
Philly died before I came to know the family.
I know there was a son named Michael. I don't remember the name of the other brother. Whose son are you?
You can reach out to me at kbhavener@gmail.com.
Best to you,

Hi Kathleen,
I am Johanna's granddaughter. She had 11 children, 8 sons Edward, Patrick, James, George, Francis ( my Dad), Noel, John and Lionel. Three daughters were Elizabeth, Eileen and Josephine. There are 50 grandchildren and at last count over 170 great grandchildren. Sadly only John and Noel survive, John is in Florida and Noel here in Scotland. We went back to Cordangan 5 years ago with Dad for his 80th Birthday, he was the last of the family to be born there in 1934 before they came to Kirkintilloch. Noel, John and Lionel were born here. My grandfathers name was Edward not Jim, they met when he was sent to Ireland to recuperate after being shot whilst serving in WW1.

Aileen! So happy to hear from you. I expect I have met you at some time in your life, as I went to visit Aunt Cha several times--although it's possible of course that you weren't born yet the last time I was in Kirkintilloch in 1981. I went with my parents, Edward Balthrop and Nellie (nee Costello), who then lived in Florida. I did not know that your Uncle John had settled in Florida. The last time I was in contact with him he lived in Baltimore. When he and Mary were young and had one son (Jack) they came to stay with my family in Florida--where I grew up--and my father, who was a family doctor, diagnosed your cousin Jack with celiac disease--an allergy to wheat.
I had no idea that Cha and Edward stayed for such a long time in Ireland! I thought all of your family except Edward (Sonny?) were born in Scotland.
Of course your grandfather's name was Edward!--how silly of me to forget since it is also my father's name. And Cha's eldest son, also Edward, lived in Hertfordshire. I visited his family there once with my Grandfather and later Edward's daughters Eileen and Anne came to visit us in Florida as well.
Since I last wrote I remembered that Rose Costello married Alex McConnell.
My grandfather Denny also served in WWI. He ran away from home at age 15 to do so. He was in the South Irish Horse Guard and returned to Tipperary at when he was 19, a few months after the war was over.
Denny had only two children, my Mother and my Uncle Pat. Uncle Pat died only 10 days ago on December 28, 2019, at age 95, in Australia. He had twin sons John and Mark who are very near to me in age (I'm 65). Neither of Pat's sons ever married. My parents had nine children of whom I am the fifth. Denny had eleven grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and (so far) 30 great-great grandchildren. Including all our spouses and significant others, my siblings and I and our offspring are 94 people.
One of my own children (Nora Bridget) emigrated from the US to France. She is married to a doctor in Brest and has two children, Tristan and Maureen. My other children are Mary Nell (named for my sister Mary and Mary Hudson and Nellie Molloy (Cha's sisters), and Sheila Rose (named for Cha's sister Rose McConnell).
You can email me at kbhavener@gmail.com -- we can communicate that way if it suits you,
So glad to have made contact.
