Hi, Happy Christmas! I'm researching my family history and wondered if anyone might be able to help me find a death record for Mary Coughlan nee Geary widow of William Coughlan 1804-1891? Any information much appreciated. Many thanks, Sally

Sally:
Happy Christmas to you also! William Coughlan was living in Spiddal, Buttevant when he died. I checked the 1901 census and the only Coughlan household was for a Michael Coughlan family which I presume was a son of William and Mary.

Since Mary was not in the 1901 census for Spiddal, I made the assumption that she died in the 1891-1901 period. I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and there were seven records but I ruled out most of the records. The only Mary Coughlan record that may be your ancestor is the link below (first record). Did William and Mary have a son Denis? If not, then this record is not correct. There is the possibility that her death was not civilly registered.

Dear Roger,
Thanks so much for the information. Very kind of you and much appreciated.Your reference to the census really helped. I've now looked on www.censusnationalarchives.ie 18 and found 18 people called Coughlan in the District Electoral Division (DED) of Buttevant in 1911 and 26 in 1901. This shows William Coughlan 1804-1891 and Mary Geary's son William Coughlan as a baker on Main Street Buttevant married to Margaret 1867-1932 a publican Main Street Buttevant - they seem to have had one child William Coughlan 1889 married to Helena Tobin born 1892 who perhaps took over the family pub. Do you happen to know if the previously Coughlan owned pub building is still on Main Street Buttevant and/or when this Coughlan family stopped running the pub? I really appreciate you taking the time and trouble on this - so kind and hugely helpful. Happy Christmas! Sally

I live in the States so I don't have any info on the Coughlan pub.
