According to records, my Cox family came to Canada from Fermanagh.  But we found information to suggest they weren't originally from Fermanagh,  but from Roscommon.  They may have moved to Enniskillen Fermanagh looking for employment.

My great grandfather is John J. Cox b. 1835, his brother William, and their parents James Cox and Mary Anderson.

They came to Canada about the same time in the mid 1800s.   We were told there was a 3rd brother who decided to move to Australia.

Thank you,

Shannon Cox

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on two subscription sites and could not locate a baptismal record for John Cox with the parents names provided in Either Roscommon or Fermanagh. Likely he was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to 1835. You may want to add the family emigration story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection.

  • Thank you for the reply Roger.

I have also been told that the last name Cox was possibly McQuilly at one point.  Anglicized to Cox.

If this is correct, when would this have happened approximately?

I located these two sites but I can't answer your question about when McQuilly became Cox.
