Hi all,
Thank you for creating such a wonderful group. I’m hoping to visit Ireland in the summer holiday with the hope of checking out some areas where my family might have come from. So what I know so far is my great great grandfather Matthew craven born abt 1844 moved to England between 1861-67. According to his eldest granddaughter he had originally trained for the priesthood before deciding to move to England. I’m not entirely sure how true this is knowing how family stories can change over time or even be made up or exaggerated. I do know that Matthews father is a Martin craven and apparently his mother was called kathleen. Again I have no evidence of his mother’s name only his fathers through marriage certificates in the UK. I’d love to find out more about my Irish heritage. I’d like to do the ground work and then hopefully bring my grandad out in September so that he can see where his family came from. It’s his dream. Any help you can offer in maybe search would be amazing. I’m really struggling to find Martin and Matthew in Roscommon. Thank you
Sam

Hi Jane
Thank you for your reply. I’m unsure of the specific date yet as I’m determining the duration of my stay on what I find out before I go to Ireland. However, I’ll be sure to send you an email with the specifics ASAP. I’ve been researching the cravens for a while and I’m pretty sure they were based in taghmaconnell. The names of those cravens run through my family even up until my grandad today. James, johns, Patrick’s, Matthews, martins. From what I can see the cravens weren’t in taghmaconnell on the tithe Applotment records but they were there on the griffiths valuation. According to the tithes some cravens were in cam and the diocese of Elphin 1749 puts some cravens in cam including a Matthew craven. Possibly my gg grandfathers grandfather or father? Pure speculation on my behalf but that’s where I’m at. And I’m well aware that they could have moved in from Galway considering the amount of cravens there are and the close proximity of taghmaconnell to Galway. Hopefully someone will be able to help in closing the gaps.
Thanks again for your reply
