Hi,
Looking for any information or contacts regarding Daltons in Athea and neighbourhood. My great great grandfather was Patrick Dalton who married Helen O'Connell and lived in Athea in the last half of the 19th century.
Found quite a few Dalton records online but can't piece together the family relationships. Any help gratefully accepted.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking at Church records for information? Perhaps if you look at what original records are available in the parish it may make things clearer in terms of relationships etc.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Athea, follow this link:
For Abbeyfeale follow:
If the family followed the Church of Ireland, check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ for inforamtion.
You could also try looking in civil records. These records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
For more information on these records check: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html
Have you tried searching in the 1901 and 1911 census records for the Daltons? These can sometimes offer lots of information, you can search these here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites that may be helpful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Limerick Library: http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/limerick/index.html
Alternatively, you could try contacting Limerick Genealogy Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:
Limerick Genealogy,
Lissanalta House,
Dooradoyle Road,
Dooradoyle,
Co. Limerick.
Phone: +353 (0) 61 496 542 Email: research@limerickgenealogy.com
I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

There is a Patrick Dalton in Rathronan (Parish), Templeathea West (Townland) who leased a plot from Timothy (my ancestor) and John Dalton according to Griffiths Valuation -- was about 1850. (I think Timothy, his wife Johanna, and daughter Mary -- plus other children -- emigrated in 1850s.)
In Athea, there's a small memorial to a Patrick Dalton killed by "British forces" in 1921 -- see the song Valley of Knockanure for more details.
